    MPC 3500 BYPASS TROUBLES

I Have a B222 that will bypass feed letter, letter R, and 11x17 all day long, but will misfeed halfway through the fuser on 81/2 x 14 every time. New bypass rubber, used differeent brand of leagl paper, no joy. I couldn't locate an explaination on bypass length detection in the manual, only width. Does anyone have any ideas before I slap on another bypass feed motor and clutch? Fuser is in really good shape, low mileage. Oh, yeah, it jams when duplexing , too.( on legal size)

Have you tried setting paper size manually in user tools? or perhabs cleaning the slider inside the bypass table the one that detects the width of the paper. If it is jamming in a duplex 2 check the inverter sensors and the 3 gray rollers which are locted on front of the fuser as u open the right hand door, sometimes one side of them gets wedged in it skews and jams.

there is nothing wrong with the copier bypass, when you select the bypass press the # key you will get a screen to select the legal size paper.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.

Have you tried this SP mode??

        SP5150 [By-Pass Length Setting] *CTL [0: OFF/ 1: ON]

        001

Determines whether the transfer sheet from the by-pass tray is used or not.
Normally the paper length for sub scanning paper from the by-pass tray is limited to 600
mm, but this can be extended with this SP to 1260 mm.

I Had this happen to a client myself a while back, and and i determined it to be a glitch in the printer driver. It was happening with 'RPCS' driver, and switching to 'PCL' solved it. Very strange, and at the time I could duplicate the problem on a different machine at my office too.

I was limited on time so I swapped in another duplexer which took care of the duplex jams. Initial inspection did not appear to be a problem with the rollers.

I should have known this, but I didn't. Thanks. It's still weird, though. I can run letter and ledger through the bypass without specifying those particular sizes with no troubles, but I do have to specify a size with legal. Why they didn't put a length-smart bypass on the machine is beyond me.

On these newer equipment bypass trays the legal size paper jams every sheet sometimes simply because the paper is not totally 14 inches long. Some of the paper manufacturers have decided to shorten the packages by just about 1/4-1/8 inch. If the paper is measured and then manually entered into the custom size accurately, it will not jam. The machine determines the length of the paper by sensor timing and thus you get constant legal jams. I have my customers put their legal paper in the second cassette if possible and that will resolve it. Ive found this primarily on the black and white models and a few color machines. Office Depot paper is the biggest culprit.

FYI: None of the MP SERIES MFP's (Colour or B&W) recognize 8 1/2 X 14 paper through the Bypass, without first setting the paper size to legal. Letter and ledger work fine on Auto Select for the Bypass but not legal. Ricoh Support does not see this as a problem.

Just to confirm what Gary Bowen stated, this is from the GKB.....

                  • The machine can automatically detect the following sizes as regular size copy paper:
                    • 220-240v- A3, A4, A4, A5, A5, A6
                    • 120v-1/21/21/21/2 in

                  • If you want to use the size of paper other than the above, be sure to specify the size.

Due to the lack of a length sensor in the tray, it can't tell the difference between Letter SEF and Legal with both being 8.5" wide. Not exactly sure why it can determine between Ledger and Letter LEF, but I think it's because the Ledger is long enough to activate the the relay sensors with its trail edge still activating the set sensor, in combination with the width.

                    yah thats true... using by-pass manual at 3500 or 2035,3035 use legal 8 1/2 x 14" or long 8 1/2 x 13" is not ok.

use cassette drawer use rotary selector paper size 8 1/2 x 14" or * signed and fixex 8 1/2 x 13" to the setting paper size
