Background. Went back and replaced drum. Blades. Dev unit. Developer. Transfer blade. Startled off ok and then the background returned after 150 copies. Is there a grounding problem on this. Thx much.

I'm guessing you autotoned it after the dv change. What is the current Vsg and Vsp.
It may be a grounding problem, I think there was a mod for the ground strap on the drum bearings. But it seems to me that that would not be related to number of copies.
However with all the parts you have replaced and with the caveats in the first sentence in mind, I would replace the drum bearing housing (I think thats the only way to get the bearings now) and the ground strap.

One should also check the toner - maybe it's not original or a wrong type.

Had the same about a year and a half. Turned out to be a bad contact somewhere in the PCU. I took the whole unit apart and cleaned/checked every contact I could find. Cleaned the contacts inside the machine. Never saw it again.

I once by accident used Japanese toner with European developer. That was not a good combination....

These machinesare famus for this and other toner problems.Ricoh changed the toner to help with this, but it still happens. Also adding an additional ground strap helps.

Yes, but most hv/ground contact issues doesn't produce an even looking background since the unwanted contact resistance issues fluctuates on moving parts.

Check the mag roller to see if it is black from toner adhereing to it. At first ricoh said to clean it with a scotchbrite pad, then they corrected themselves and said to fold up a piece of paper and use that. Like that would work well!!

The paper works, but it takes a long time. It was suggested to me to use a Mr. Clean Magic eraser, and I finally had the opportunity to try it out, and DAMN, it actually works really well for getting that crap off.

Scrape the loose stuff off with a piece of paper, or vacuum it off, your choice, then wet the Magic eraser and go to town. Quick and easy! Very surprised how well it worked.

X2 - we have this problem with toner, after replacement of drum,developer,etc..after 100 copies the copy started to have a background.we did sky shot but replacing(again) the developer and toner( to original) solved the problem.

Run some skyshots through it to get the toner density down, then recalibrate the TD sensor in SP2801. I went to a 5001 which I ran over 200 duplex skyshots through with no toner bottle in it, having already vacuumed out the PCU and hopper, before it was right.

                        These machines are bloody woeful.

I've had issues with poor contact in the PCU....wound up using a known good second hand pcu and replacing the parts and it fixed it.

The MP4000/5000 series machines also don't like Katun drums. We had major copy quality issues where the machines ran light, and changing dev made no difference.

Further investigation revealed that on some machines, it would cause process control not to update the drum voltage settings (as it should do to compensate as the drum ages).

We switched back to Ricoh drums and all the headaches went away.
