    MPC 2550 broken trays

    Hey all,

Lately I have had some strongarm customers breaking the mpc 2550 trays. It has the release handle connected to an arm which fits right into the frame edge of the tray. My customers keep grabbing the handles and yanking out on the tray which snaps the tray frame where the release arm mounts. Seems to me like once this is broken you have to replace the whole tray assembly.

Now I heard mention of a metal bracket some people have been making to reinforce if not repair these. Have any of you come across such a thing, and what has been your luck with some sort of repair when this happens. I am trying to come up with something because i have one customer who has broken 3 of these in the last month now and I am running out of spare trays.

    Thanks for your input.

Unfortunately when the customer breaks the latch, we just replace the whole tray.

    Sorry not much help.

Ya we have been doing that to but when you contract the machine repairs and the customer is breaking a tray every dang week its like seriously a small snap and its a whole tray, there has got to be a way to fix or reinforce them what junk they seem to be.

they should not break under normal handling so contract or not, i would be first giving them a warning then charging them for the new trays. It is not the machines fault they are getting broke. I have near 50 of these in 1 account and not once have they broke a tray, many lower gate pawls but never a tray.

If your customers are being heavy-handed then instruct them on proper tray usage and warn them that they will have to pay, parts and labour, in future for this kind of damage. Otherwise you may end up with a machine that was "accidentally" dropped down some stairs, which you would have to replace under your contract; at your expense.

In the end, they are just creating more work for you and more problems for themselves.

I agree with the others. My contract clearly states that damage due to misuse, abuse, etc. is not covered, and will be repaired at the expense of the customer.
To me a broken tray fits into the same category as running a staple through the machine and scratching a drum, or gouging the fuser trying to remove a paper jam with a screw driver - all things that I'm not paying for. It's remarkable how much more gentle they become once it starts costing

There is a very helpful thread already here in this forum about this model's broken trays that leads to this:
Ricoh Paper Tray Repair Kit - OMEGA PRO FIX**** Fix it once. Relax.
The forum search is your friend. You just need to be patient with it. Or at least that's all I needed to do to find this, but then again I might not be the sharpest spork in the box. Oh, well. Still, hope this helps you out like it has helped me the times I've used it.

Thanks both of you, both ideas was sort of what I was trying to come up with. Thanks iowatech for finding that post i did try to search before posting and just must not have used the right words, and thanks Sharpmind for your time in sharing your repair. Both are helpful in solving my problem.

As for the customer getting charged for it, unfortunatly thats up to management I did bring that thought to their attention but these arent the first customers we have repaired even though they were likely the cause of the damage. I however as a tech would rather repair and get raises then keep replacing stuff customers are damaging.

Thank you all for your advice

I would beef up the stop point with a cushion/ padded metal enforced and extend the sensor point to compensate for padding.

If it comes to DAAHR operators that don't care if the company takes a hit, you have to go out every month to troubleshoot and order the same part, don't care about why and just bitch that the copier never works.

                      Billing extra will never work.

Field Mods that stop callbacks separate the men from the boys and may get you some respect from the boss.

3/4 of factory mechanical modifications have been submitted by field techs that had an idea that worked.
