    Xerox Strikes Again

Xerox dealer told there customer that the power supply at there location was unstable and they had to purchase a UPS for there copier.
It is my understanding that this is a bad idea. This copier has had this UPS on it for about 6 months. It is not a "Copier Rated UPS". Does this mean it's ok for this application or is this a bad thing waiting to happen? Is there any lit out there concerning this subject?

    Thanks

We put what is called a smart filter on all of our MFP's. It protechs the products from things like line spikes to lightning strikes

I don't know how useful a UPS would be on a copier. It can't safely power down the machine. I guess if you were having short brown outs it might help, but I don't think it will keep a copier running for very long.

From what I've heard, it's a bad idea to put a UPS on a printer/MFD that uses a fuser/fixing unit. This is from a while ago though, so take it with a grain of salt.
Anyway, from what I've seen it appears that the machines with thermal fixing units require a direct connection with the safety ground line, and a UPS has a floating safety ground (to isolate the safety ground line from surges).
I guess having the machine hooked up to a UPS might be better than having stupid line voltage problems, but it is something to avoid if at all possible. We've used line conditioners for a while, and while they aren't a cure for all stupid line voltage problems, they seem to work pretty well most of the time.

If you absolutely want to put a UPS in front of a Printer/MFP, the current rating for the UPS should be at least 20% to 30% above the rated amperage of the printer/MFP. So if you have a 15 Amp machine you need a 2000 amp-volt rated UPS.
