With one particular brand, we accused them of not hitting anywhere near their toner yields. They suggested a firmware update would fix it, which then wiped the record keeping the machine did for yields. Sneaky people. We don't sell that brand anymore. I know other dealers had the same problem.

Updated firmware, can also make the machine work with newer windows servers, drivers, and security protocols, can make the machine save toner, or prevent fusers from getting damaged, and a lot of other tings.

It's the same as updating a computer with windows update, or flashing the BIOS, to get stuff to work better.

The firmware updates are usually done to fix a particular problem on a specific model machine. For instance new values for a paper feed timing problem. Or new toner clutch on timing values. It could be to fix stupid things as well like spelling in sp mode options or whatever.

It will not be like loading Android Lolipop on a Kitkat phone and seeing a world of layout difference. Most of the changes are in the background.
