      It's PDF and 200x200.

There are a few "...image send" adjustments in TC 46 - you might want to start there since copies and prints are OK.

Re: MX4101 scanning quality bad print and copy fine.

I think that the default resolution is set low, probably 200dpi. The higher the resolution the better the image.

You did not mention whether you are scanning to SMB, FTP, or email. Resolution is usually not an issue with SMB or FTP protocols, since there aren't any arbitrary limits to the size of the file. But with scan to email the receiving email account will limit the size of the attachment. And the higher the resolution, the larger the file size, which further reduces the number of pages you'll be able to send as a group. Additionally color scans are 10x larger file size than the same dpi file in monochrome.

So when scan to email is used, it is a compromise of greatest number of pages versus best image quality. The typical settings that I set as default are:
          300 x 300 dpi
          monochrome
          Text original type
          PDF file type

Each of these settings are individually changeable for any single scan. So, say your customer occasionally scans legal documents in small type, which naturally requires higher image resolution. They can make specific selections just for that one scan, and the MFP will default back when finished. It does take a little more education to get your enduser to make specific settings changes when needed. If your enduser says something like: "Just make it work!" you won't get very far down this road. =^..^=

          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.

I would first clean the optics. Then change the exposure setting to text/printed photo and tick color tone enhancement in copy settings.

Do a scanner color / bw balance adjustments to lower low density & increase High density
            sim 46-5(b/w scanner) low A/C from 50 to 65
            High A/C from 50 to 1

sim 46-8 (color scanner) low A/C from 50 to 65
            High A/C from 50 to 1

then may be increase the dpi to 300 & increase the compression to high in image send settings. so end file might be close in size to 200dpi one.

            good luck !

check attached examples.( The scans were off the glass going to win 10 on MacBook air ). set to mono2, 300dpi, and text, should be okay. all scanner density settings in sim modes are at default.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. It was the DPI. I bumped it up to 300x300 and scan to emails looks perfect. Thanks.
