    sharp mxb402sc mft paper jam

I arrived to replace a fixing unit...
replaced the fixing unit then listened to the customer's other issue...

apparently the multipurpose tray (bypass ) wasn't feeding in the morning... then suddenly started feeding...
I asked about thick paper... or thin paper or glossy paper...
    no just regular paper...

it fed about a 100 sheets for me then just stopped...
I took out the spring loaded tray...
looked at the roller... it looked good...

    I started playing with it...

it worked for a while then...
    it just stopped moving...
you could hear all the gears turning for bypass to pull paper...
but the roller did not spin...

I opened the side door and could spin the roller by spinning the gear towards the back...
strangely every now and again the roller would spin freely... and the roller would not move...

I am thinking there is a clutch that is slipping...
There is also the possibility that if the bypass is motor driven then the motor is bad...

I haven't looked at any manuals... yet...
I am just doing some free association...

friday I am headed back to do some deep diving...
I am going to take a look... and draw some conclusions...
    customer was super busy today...
so I could not go too deep...

    anybody have any ideas...
any experience with the bypass on these things...
    any ideas appreciated...

if i am a bit snappy...
feel free to go off on me...
    I can take it...

Re: sharp mxb402sc mft paper jam

i looked at the parts manual on page 39
and noticed a couple of things...
one the spring loaded tray had part number 26 missing on the spring loaded tray that I pulled out...
this was missing from both ends...
I noticed there is a solenoid... that could be sticking or the stopping plate could have come out of place...
I didn't see any clutches... but part number 20... the spring could have come undone or overstretched...
gear 18 looked out but I need to check gear 21
I think the paperfeed drive unit on page 87 is worth checking out...
but my gut tells me its something in the bypass...
tray one and two work great...
but there could be a gear with worn teeth or a belt...

I think the bypass is worth exploring first and then if anything the paperfeed drive unit...

as always... any one with experience please speak up....

Here are the issues and fixes I have found with this style bypass, random not feeding is usually caused by the 2 small plastic rollers that sit on front and rear of the lift tray on the bypass, they get dry and wont let the paper lift to the pickup roller. They did have a bulletin on new rollers but I just put some Triflo oil on them. The next thing to clean is all the sensors in the paper path around
the reg. roller and paper tray assembly, remove the entire right door and its easier to get at these. Now with the right door off the machine look in the rear edge and you can see
a solenoid sitting back their that has a flat solenoid arm with a spring on it, this fires each time the bypass needs to feed paper. I put a small dab of lite grease on the white plastic cam that this
metal arm grabs, it gets dry and won't release each time the solenoid fires.
      Hope these tips help. Dan
