We have a new BP-FX11 fax on a new BP-70M31, that on site and when starting to connect just gives a sound like an electrical short. There is no dial tone and the machine says on Job status Tel. Of course is does not send or receive. We have replaced the Fax module with the same result. We brought the machine back into the shop (an hour away) and it works fine. We have replaced the phone line cord and it is also with just the two wire type. We are thinking it is a phone line issue, but the machine we are replacing (MX-M364) has a fax installed that is not having any issues sending or receiving. Looking for any ideas, as the customer says the old machine works why not this one.

Normally it's that the line is failing... But definitely hard to prove that to the customer. The most aggravating sentence out of a customer's mouth is "the old machine never did that." or something like it.
Whenever we've had those symptoms I've heard it's that there is unnecessary electric in the wiring. Here are two things you could try
Set Fax Soft SW 39, bit 1-3 (Threshold of electric current in fax starting)=000. Turn off "dial tone detection" with SIM 66-1 (Used to display the FAX-related soft SW) SW 9 bit 7 = "0"๐ 1 -
