    [CQ] Sharp AR 407

Scan Carriage stalls out when trying to scan. Suspected the white, cable pulleys. Strangely enough, the scanner will make a complete scan across the platen, when set to reduce the copy to 85% but no higher. Thinking the scanner pulleys work better because it scans faster... Does anyone have the part number to these pulleys (X4) if that is the problem ? Thanks for your help !

    Ok, here's the short version:
It's a common failure on Cougars. Either dirty scanner rails, or scanner motor, or scanner motor driver board, or some combination of the above. And there's a twist. There's a new version scanner motor/driver board combination, and an old version scanner motor/driver board combination.

In my experience, the new style is not better or worst than the old style parts. So if these parts are still available, you can replace only the driver board old style or a scanner motor old style. If I remember correctly the old style scanner motor has a plastic flywheel, and the new style does not have an external flywheel. If you decide to convert to the new style motor/driver board you must change a simulation setting to accommodate the new style components. It's unlikely that you'll find functional used components, since this is the most common failure on this model.

At one point I had six machines in the graveyard, all with disfunctional scanners or blown PCU boards.

These are a few examples of database entries on Cougar scanner problems:

Lines in the feed direction at the leading edge of the copy when copying off the glass. The scanner stalls ~1/2 way and buzzes, then slams on return. Intermittently 2 of 50 copies. Defective scanner motor driver PWB. No errors displayed or stored. Replace the scanner motor driver PWB (AR-407: CPWBF1482FCE2; AR-337: CPWBF1279FCE2).

Streaks on copies on AR-405. Scanner stalls @ 34 mm. Cleaned & Lubricated scanner rails with 30 weight motor oil.

Streaks on copies, intermittently, @ 34mm, on AR-335. Scanner stalls @ 34mm. Clean & lubricate scanner rails with 30 weight motor oil for some improvement. Replace the scanner motor (RMOTP0829FCZZ).

Streaks on copies, intermittently, @ 45mm, on AR-335. RADF copies fine. Scanner stalls @ 45mm. Clean & lubricate scanner rails with 30 weight motor oil for some improvement. Replace the scanner motor driver PWB (CPWBF1279FCE2).

Streaks on copies, intermittently, @ 8", on AR-337. Scanner stalls @ 8". Cleaned & Lubricated scanner rails with 30 weight motor oil for some improvement. Replace the scanner motor driver PWB (CPWBF1482FCE1).

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

If the pulleys are bad, it is usually easy to tell. The side-to-side play of a bad pulley will be noticeable compared to a good pulley, the bearings may even be falling out. Is there resistance at any point when moving the mirror assembly by hand? If the rails are clean and properly lubed and there is still resistance, look closer at the pulleys. If the movement is smooth, as BC says, the scanner motor PWB is likely the problem.

If problem still exists after cleaning/lubing scanner rails, then 99% of the time it is the scanner pwb bad.

There were two styles of motors and scanner pwbs; it's common practice to replace both at the same time. If the motor was taking out the pwb and a new one was replaced, you would be back to square one. If I can find the tech bulletin, I'll post it.

Most of the time you are better off replaceing the motor ,pwb and the pulleys (6), at the same time. I have replaced just the motor and pwb and it was fine for a couple of months then start up again. Also clear the rail and the pads on the scannner unit. Good Luck

HI JEFF !!!- This was awhile back but I ended up changing the Motor and PWB at the same time. I changed it from the old style to the new style (or visa versa I can't remember) it fixed it right up. I had to re-drill some holes on the motor but it's still running today.
