MX-M623n tray four not recognizing paper size

Installed this machine a week ago and tray four will not recognize the paper size. Did perform the tray four max-min position adjustment in service mode but not reading paper when set to auto-inch in defaults. What exactly is used to determine paper size and where are the sensors located?? Thanks

Pull the tray out and look to the back of the machine, its a black box on the right. You can test with sim 30-2.

I assume that box is just to determine paper length but what is used to determine paper width??

There are 4 switches in that box. It is a combination of how they are tripped that tells it what size.

I guess I am still confused since the mechanical slider on the paper tray does determine the location of the trip mechanism for paper length. How does that determine paper width also since there is no mechanical link between the side guides and the slider on the back of the tray??

Its all in the manual! You asked for size sensors and that's what we gave you...

Ok appreciate the thoughts. Not a Sharp dealership so manuals are no go.

There are only 4 lengths (excepting EXTRA or custom), and each is matched with only one width (excepting EXTRA and custom).
If the guide sees 8.5 length, it assumes the width is 11. If it sees 11 inch length, the width must be 8.5, ; and so on for legal and ledger.

Ok that is helpful. I already swapped the sensors with tray three so it must be a board issue. Thanks everyone.

Check the teardrop shaped arm on the underside of the tray. Most Sharps have these teardrop arms and they tend to catch on the frame as the drawer is pulled out. Being that they are geared directly to the size sensing plate, a single missing tooth will throw off size sensing.

Thanks for the info but if you swap the trays the problem persists. I even swapped the tray with another machine so I'm pretty confident the problem isn't the tray.

Just for everyone's future reference there is a mechanism on the bottom fourth tray rail that reads the width. There is a metal bracket attached to the bottom of the tray that trips this mechanism. In my case the bottom frame of the machine was bent preventing the mechanism from reading properly. I still had to do the tray 4 adjustment in sims in order for the machine to detect size properly.

A little judicious use of the heat gun or pencil torch will soften up that teardrop gear enough to warp the leading edge up, so it clears the frame. I've done a few. The complaint is usually: "Why can't I get tray #2 to come out?"

The trick to get it open is to open the tray a little, reach in and gradually move the side gides, which rotates the gear, until it comes open. =^..^=

                          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
