[CQ] ES 281C Color registration off

I've been fighting this problem for a couple weeks now. It's a very low volume machine only 7k color and 70k black. It prints black images just fine and prints poorly about 30% of the time on color images. When it messes up, the colors are completely off from one another. Its not the same each time. Black will be there, then sometimes Cyan, the Magenta is farther off then Yellow is even farther. Sometime all the colors are on the page but still about an inch or so off from lining up. Other times, black is there and blue and the magenta and yellow show up on the next print.

I can provide examples of prints if needed. Since black prints fine, I assumed it is a transfer belt issue and it seems to be slipping somehow. I have replaced the main drive motor, thinking it may be malfunctioning. I see no problems with the drive gear on the machine side or the drive coupler on the belt unit. I also replaced the drive roller inside the transfer belt unit and cleaned the unit of toner dust thoroughly. I also oiled each bearing in the belt unit. Still after that it prints bad color some of the time. I have not called the Toshiba tech-line yet as they never seem to happy to help with these models, but I will if needed. My next step would be to see if there is a bad clutch or gear in the main drive pack. The other brands we service, you can usually just buy a new drive pack prebuilt and install, but I dont see one for this model in the parts list. PLEASE, IDEAS ARE APPRECIATED!

PS, there is a new drum, blade, transfer blade, black dv installed recently because of reduced CQ from the years they were on the machine. Still using original transfer belt, but I figured it the reflective tape was that bad, it would error out.

We are down to 2 of these models in the field and I can't wait to get rid of them.

It's probably the drive belts and gears in the main drive unit.have done this job many times on the previous model(3511)&a couple of times on this unit.if you've never done it before, allow yourself at least 3 hours.have fun!!

The roller under the transfer 2 facing roller has bushons which become dirty and slow the transfer belt down. Also worth cleaning the sensors (and even swapping the around).

May not come up with an error is people have disabled the codes for IQC. Will just keep going.
It didn't say that I couldn't do it in the manual.

I would replace the X-fer belt..those reflectors are the only thing that determine registration...they do get dull and might work well enough to not generate an error, but not well enough to keep the registration in check..agree with the statement about the IQC codes being turned off..this will allow the MFP to keep working no matter how crappy the reg is...Emujo

Thanks for all the advice. I replaced the gears in the drive system for the transfer, then the machine sounded like a freight train, but still didn't fix the problem. We ended up getting the customer to buy a new machine so I got lucky with this one. I know the machine is fixable, but it is just a bad design IMO.

Check the revolver drive. There are several bulletins about gear mesh and missing teeth. The other thing to check is the revolver home sensor. If this is dirty it can throw off the drum to dev unit alignment causing misregistration.

They are pretty good machines if kept clean. Harder to maintain/fix (dev drive etc) than some models but this is my favourite toshiba model alongside the 2820c models
