Re:failure to Toshiba E-Studio 280 firmware update
I need some help about e-studio 280 firmware update. the Screen is Freezed at following stage:
"Download Storage Update Mode
Please wait ........ now initialization "
It never go to next stage even after waiting much longer than 3 minutes, like 30 minutes. Does it need file path? I just put 6 data files in root directory, I may think it would like Ricoh's to create Folder directory path Romdate and subfolder product code, please advice.
By changing other USB storage keys, simply pop up the message:

I did change HDD, I updated the firmware because of it.
I am thinking of USB key problem, 1GB key from the dollar store may not work well. I changed other key, it just popped up the number in series 1.2.3.4.5.6., no context and no version number. And another luck chance was that it popped up the number 1. marked "*HDD data", no version number, I hit the START key, it works fine, updating HDD mass data, no error cod, no failure. but 08-933, 08-934, 08-935 still blank no firmware loaded, So I am thinking, I still need updating ROM.bin, and sysfirm.bin
So far I can not print, "Data In" flashing, but never paper come out. Also I cannot access TopAccess web monitor.
Re: failure to Toshiba E-Studio 280 firmware update
Problem solved, Using small SD card(for Ricoh machine) via USB reader, FAT format is important issue as well as quality of USB flash Drive, must be a brand name.

There is a particular procedure when replacing Toshiba drives that must be followed. What another poster said about using a very small (and now hard to find) smaller USB drive is correct on the older series (e-280 series). That's why I still have a working 512mb drive around, but all my older machines have already been updated with the latest 4006 firmware at this date, or traded in by now.
Here is the actual procedure I use. Hope it will help someone! (this does not apply to the "6" series and newer Toshibas, like e-256, 456, etc. Only to the older, up to "5" series machines:
HDD REPLACEMENT ON A TOSHIBA
Installnew drive in rear of copier
Poweron machine holding Clear and 3 Chooseoption 3, then Start Whenmachine says "Loader Partition Created", power off Thenpower on again with Clear/3 Chooseoption 2, then Start Whenmachine says "Format Complete", power off
InstallUSB stick in rear right USB slot Powerup holding "4" and "9" Shouldcome up with Firmware List Choosethe HDD UPDATE option only, and deselect others (usually options 1, 3 and 4 getdeselected by pressing those buttons), then press Start. Machineshould start loading about 3 levels of partitions in the drive
Whenit says "Update Completed", power off the machine, and remove the USBstick.
Powerup holding "0" and "8" and go into Adjust Mode Choose690 and Start to format the drive one final time.
Whenyou power off and back on, the machine should come up normally in the Idle(Ready) state
