Hello:
I purchased a Xerox Workcentre Pro 232 on an online auction a couple of years ago from a local community college.
The immediate need was the ability to print and copy 11x17, of which the machine has performed flawlessly.
I have been running it in a small office environment, with a simple router with internet access, one workstation and one laptop. I have had no issues connecting to it to print.
The secondary reason for purchase was to utilize scan, scan to file, as I have years of 11x17 colored artwork I desired to digitize for internet publication and marketing.
I consider myself tech savvy, I can dig into concepts and sort them out even though I have no formal training. I have been hanging out at the Xerox forums under the same name tray1empty.
I dabble with this problem on and off, time is a premium, but essentially I cannot gain access to the CWIS, I am being blocked. I have attempted numerous approaches, including, but not limited to:
1.) using a windows 8.1 laptop 64bit, with current Xerox Global driver, tried to access CWIS using IP address through router, firewall on and off, i don't run any antivirus, straight through ethernet.
2.) same as above, direct connection with crossover cable, no CWIS.
3.) same as 1.) but a windows 7 professional workstation, through router and direct connection, no CWIS.
4.) pulled out an old windows visa business machine, same result, no CWIS.
5.) same as 4.) but with an old windows XP service pack 3 machine, no CWIS.
6.) all the above using IE and Firefox, even going as far as Firefox 4 and Firefox 2 to get as close to backwards compatibility as possible, and now CWIS Access.
My best and closest attempts to "get into the machine" have been on the windows xp machine running the original CD's that came with printer, these software's include, Auditron, Software Upgrade 12.4, and Fax Restore, these three programs communicate with the machine, but have limited abilities. Most interesting is Software Upgrade (machine currently running 13.60.18.000) and that the software could easily upgrade to 13.60.22.00 HOWEVER, Xerox only supplies a DLM file (for use within CWIS for upgrade) and not a UGD file suffix.
I went so far as "obtaining" PWS, but what I have discovered there, is that; although great, I don't seem to have the right "module file" for this particular machine. What appears on the available PWS are machines that are mostly Color Document Center. I have PWS running on the Windows XP machine, but fear it quite useless with out the right module file, and quite possibly a 9 pin serial cable. Although 9 pin cables can be bought on the cheap on eBay, I've yet to verify if I have a serial cable on any of the aforementioned machines to make a mat happen. I see at ebay these hybrid cables, 9 pin serial to USB which are interesting but not sure if they would work in this environment.
I have run Nmap/Zenmap on the machine, finding open TCP ports and 1 and 9100 of course, and one UDP port at 161 running SNMPv1 server, and three more ports 5432, 7000, and 7007, running postgresql, afsfileserver, and afs3-bos, respectively. I want to know more about these, maybe if I could figure out a way to communicate with these in some way shape or form? Knoppix comes to mind, although I'm not sure if that will get me results other than geek amusement.
Ultimately, something or someone has block the CWIS in either accidental or intentional form. And ultimately I desire to overcome said obstacle. I found and interesting tidbit in a PDF at Xerox discussing "Secure Installation and Operation of your Workcentre Pro 232...". One blurp calls out "16. Be careful not to create an IP Filtering rule that rejects incoming TCP traffic from all addresses with source port set to 80; this will disable the Web UI." My novice-ness undertands the concept but cannot ascertain how to logistical overcome the potentialness of said phrase.
I think I want to rest the NVM (NVRam), I've found on the internet, this idea of holding down 0 and pressing start, but either this is for a different machine (likely) or I am doing it wrong (sequence/timing). If someone knows of a different method at resetting the NVM that would be awesome. Speaking of NVM, I have a 3.5 floppy with Xerox Resident Diskette, and it has two files on it resembling NVM. But not sure what good this does me as I wouldn't know what to do with anyway.
At another point long ago, I took out the battery from the main board for a couple of days, hoping it would loose memory, and that didn't work, unless the battery in question is dead already.
I think I even removed the hard drive and tried to make it a slave and look around the drive for signs of life, and I wasn't able to much with that. It went back in with no adverse affects.
Well, I'm angling for NVM reset, an AltBoot technique, or PWS accesss, but I need some help and insight from people that know more than I, can you assist, point, deliberate with me what can be done?
Thanks in advance.
