I would guess the toner powder itself is the same as the 4110/4112 and D95/D110/D136, but am not 100% sure. Obviously, the cartridges and chips are different.

The 4110/4590/4595/4112/4127/D95/D110/D125 all use the same toner and developer

The D136 and B-series use the newer ECO LGK (low gloss black) toner and matching developer.

It wouldn't surprise me if the older toner worked in the new machines and vice versa, but they are definitely not the same. The gloss of the old toner is very noticeable compared to the new toner, and for B&W, the low gloss looks much better (in my opinion).

Swapping toner powders may cause density issues or instability, this series of machines did have trouble there in the early days when Xerox switched from the original toner manufactured by Fuji Xerox and started making it here in North America instead. They didn't do a good job replicating the behavior of the original toner and there were years of issues with density. So the machines might be very sensitive to changing the toner, but it would still likely WORK, but holding the right density might be problematic.

Currently, all D136 and B-series machines in North America still use toner manufactured by Fuji, which is who actually make the machines. But they may try and make it for themselves again like the older toner at some point. (They typically do this with ALL machines, it isn't usually a problem. They wait until there are enough of a series of machine out in the field that it is cheaper to make the toner locally rather than import it. Until that critical mass is reached, they just buy it from Fuji with the Xerox name on it.)

You can always tell a toner or drum is a Fuji product or a NA Xerox product, because the Fuji product packaging is much (much) nicer. Plus, Fuji only uses brand new cartridge housings, and NA Xerox recycles them. So sometimes the NA Xerox products look pretty beaten up.

Again, this isn't usually an issue. And if you're on contract you have no choice what you get. But NA Xerox has screwed up a few times in their myopic focus on cheap cheap cheap. The 4110 toner is the first one that comes to mind. The Versant toner debacle that lasted years was a doozy. In both cases they introduced new toner part numbers to help people differentiate from the older poorly made toner and the new one, once they "solved the problem" (in other words, quit chasing pennies and made a reliable product).

And of course the NA Xerox drums, for all machines, are typically less... impressive... than Fuji ones. Much higher failure and defect rates.

As far as I know, Fuji has never had a similar toner mishap of their own. It's only been when NA Xerox takes over manufacturing, instead of importing. Fuji has much higher standards than NA Xerox, but correspondingly higher pricing, too.
