    WC 4150 Firmware Upgrade Problems

Trying to solve an issue in upgrading our firmware from .42 to .71.
We have a number of XP-based systems hooked up through an Apple Airport Extreme router. We have been using this setup for years without any printing problems, including e-mailing of PDF faxes. My understanding is that there are two ways to send the firmware to the printer: either through the CWIS, or through the USB service port. Both ways are failing for us.

    Via the Service Port:
Downloaded the PSU (printer settings utility) software from Xerox. Installed it on a system w/o the driver for the 4150 installed. Tried to run the software, but got a Printer Not Found type of message. Installed the printer driver on two different systems - a desktop and a laptop - both with the printer driver installed. From both systems, got a windows-style message box stating "Document FAILED to load!" with just an OK button. PSU.exe file then closes out, never starting. So that method is for some reason failing outright.

    Via CWIS:
Had issues with the "Invalid file name/path" error using FF4 and IE8 (on some systems). Had more success using IE8 and Opera in that it would at least seem that it was attempting to send the FW file. The closest we have gotten is a "Some errors were reported - Printer is busy" message. This appears after confirming our desire to upgrade the firmware and after a new, blank window opens for 10 seconds. (The error message appears in this blank window).

Here is what we have tried:
    • Disabled firewall (XP) and anti-virus (MSE)
    • Made sure no one was using the printer and that it had no jobs in the queue
    • Using firmware downloaded from Xerox

Xerox suggested selecting "Disable SSL" under the Properties/Connectivity/Protocols/HTTP section of the web interface. However, this option is already set, and the ability to change it is locked as the dropdown is grayed out. In order to un-gray it, you must turn off the HTTP Enabled checkbox, but doing so will disable the web interface and then you can't use it to upgrade the firmware. (Catch-22, or am I missing something?)

So we are left with software (PSU) that won't open on two different computers, and a web interface which is reporting errors due to the printer being (falsely) busy. Xerox has been providing support via e-mail, but hasn't suggested something that we haven't already considered.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    John
