Did you try downloading the driver again from canon?
Did you try creating a port instead of updating the driver.
You must create a port first in order to add the IP address>Standard/Tcp/ip
    Attached Files

What is the ip of the computer? is it on the same subnet? Is it using the same gateway?

Sounds like a firewall is blocking it. Assuming its a new comp WinXP firewall comes on by default. Right click My Network Places and select properties. On the left panel you should see "Change Windows Firewall Settings", click that. Either turn off the firewall (temporarily or permanent) or under the exceptions tab click add program and add the setup program.

If you can scan and ping I doubt it is your cable. I'd focus on your firewall or anti-virus. It's possible SNMP is being blocked or not installed. If it is when you add the port it won't be able to detect the network card and just install Generic Network card and port settings.

              Try this:
              Go to a command prompt and type: "LPR -S 192.168.2.100 -P print -o /l c:\text.txt"

You can use any text file instead of the "C:\text.txt", or create one by typing "edit c:\text.txt" and hit enter. Make some words then do save as, just remember the path.

Have you tried accessing the RUI of the copier and try a direct print from the left side menu? Open your browser and type in the copiers IP address. If you can get that to work, then you generally have a printer driver issue, or possibly firewall issue as D_L_P has mentioned...

If you can't print from a dos prompt but can access the RUI you definitely have something blocking port 515 or the print and filesharing services.
Just one thing else to check, the copier isn't setup to block a certain ip range or mac addresses? Print out a user data report and check that " block ip range" and "mac access list" are empty or turned off.

You may have mistaken what I was referring to when I asked you to "Direct Print". There is in the menu, on the left side of the Remote User Interface, a selection called Direct Print. You have to designate the image file from within the RUI browse function, and then select print from the menu on the right side of the screen. Have you tried that? I don't know what is supposed to occur from that command string you entered into a browser window...
