    c3170 - E00020-0081

I have a number of c3170s that keep on giving error code E00020-0081 with annoying frequency. I keep cleaning the sensors, and have replace the drum, I have replaced the DV-units; and about every three weeks or so, I get the same code over and over again.

    What am I missing?

    What am I missing?

When an E020-0081 error code is displayed on the control panel (the value of [P-SENS-P] has been
detected as being less than 255) while the background of the image on the drum is being checked upon
power-up or recovery from sleep mode, the machine stops operation with the bias voltage applied to the
charging roller. This leaves the charging roller mark
on the drum surface (Fig 1), causing black lines in
    the main scanning direction.

    .
A modification is made, so that the charge to the charging roller is
    disabled at the emergency stop
    .

When the above mentioned symptom occurs update the DC-Controller firmware to the following versions:
    (imageRUNNER C 3100 Series: Ver.45.01 / imageRUNNER C 3170/2570 Series: Ver.14.01).

    check your DCon ver.

I am already familiar with the situation and have upgraded to firmware V.19.01 as you recommended in the past (thanks). I do not get the lines anymore and the drums are not damaged, but the E00020-0081 still pops up every three weeks or so; all I have to do is clean the sensor and error goes away.
      What else do you suggest?

What about drum life? If the drum is at 100%, change it...

Stray Toner on patch image read sensor !!
what is your Color Volume weekly ??
one or more of the Dev. units could be causing the issue of overtone
do u receive any different E020 codes in history

Check if the Intermediate Transfer Belt Assembly Tension Arms are damaged, preventing proper tension from being placed on the Intermediate Transfer Belt.

have u checked the connector for patch image read sensor/ or replaced it

hi. i am giving you the full and final solution. if it not work then i will leave my field.

you just open the drum and take it out and then you see inside you will find the sensor fixed upside of the drum. just clean it. this sensor is below the transfer sheet. i hope you will find it. just clean it. and then go to *28* then go to counter then misc and clear drum counter.

do it. and let me know.

By all means, clean the patch read sensor, but do NOT reset the drum counter unless the drum is replaced!

Sounds like you've done all the right stuff. I would try to increase the ITB belt cleaning blade tension. Might sound like I'm on the wrong track to you but I had 2 machines in the field that were doing the same thing and I did all the stuff you did (drum/dv units/system software updates/ cleanings and adj. There are two adj points to increase spring tension on the rear of the cleaning blade assembly (increase tension but don't overdo it) which keeps the ITB belt a little cleaner , which in turn helps to delay accumulation of toner on drum and other internal components. I understand that you are not getting lines now and may wonder how this will help since the ITB is basically clean but I was getting that code every 3 weeks or so on 2 machines and now about every 4 months or so it comes up. Let me know if this works for you like it did for us. Don't reset drum counter ! When you clean the patch sensor I hope you clean all that toner that builds up on the dv units and toner cartridges in the carosel area also or the code comes back real quick as the cycling of the dv units disperses the excess toner . Also attatched tech pub on latest software/firmware but sounds like you already read it.
