You would need the SST and the system software to upgrade. Also probably need a hard drive, from what you said it sounds like it is getting slow and maybe ready to die on you.

You might be able to get away with a hard drive clear...you might just have corrupt data on the drive. I would certainly try that before using the SST. After doing the HD CLR you will need to reinstall all user settings so make sure you print out all the units data sheets before you do anything. If you want more info on how to do the procedure let me know and I can post more info .

Kuby's post in July correctly advised you that your hard drive sounds like it is slowing down and getting ready to die on you. You'll need a new hard drive now and will have to use the service support tool to reload the system software. Probably time to call a Canon rep and get this problem solved for good.

If you wanted to attempt this yourself there are a ton of posts on this site that will give you an idea what's involved but -

you need to download the system software for the machine or version you need. unpack it and register it with sst . You'll need the correct cable, its not a simple thing to use. Even after reading the service support tool manual it still can be complicated until you learn how to actually do it.

Call a Canon guy and be done with it.
