[Error Code] iPF6100 close upper cover error

I'm looking at an iPF6100 with a "close upper cover" error (obviously, the upper cover is closed). It will not initialize, it will not enter service mode, it will not shut down (unless you unplug it). Here is how the problem came about:
    1) Unit ran out of yellow and PGY inks
    2) Inks replaced several months later
    3) Error message (L Head overtemp)
    4) Entered service mode, started printhead replacement routine)
    5) Error message (maintenance tank full).
    6) Powered down.
    7) Tried to power back up - frozen at multi sensor error
    8) Powered down
    9) Tried to power back up - frozen at "close upper cover" error. Would not shut down with power button
    10) Booted to firmware update mode. Used L Printer service tool to update from firmware version 1.36 to 1.39. Firmware update was successful (unit powered off when finished)
    11) Tried to power back up - frozen at "close upper cover" error

Does anybody know how to recover from this?

Re: iPF6100 close upper cover error

i had a problem with an earlier model that caused a lockup /loop and my solution was to remove the ink tanks and heads and power up the machine. this initiated the original set up routine where it asked for heads then asked for ink then filled etc etc. a bit wasteful but it did get me out of trouble. i have also had an error , once again on an earlier model where the upper cover opto sensor was dislodged.
