To be honest, I've just flat out turned a couple of those machines down. Lexmark ought to be ashamed of themselves. Those things are worse than the color laserjet fuser drive assemblies.

I have YET to receive one of these splicing things that Lexmark mentions is included in the media feed clutches! I've done maybe 4(?) of them (PITA!) and like blackcat does.......strip/solder/shrink.

I bend that part out, so the plate doesn't come so close to the magnet. I think ONCE, I had to go back, because I didn't bend it far enough. But I've been doing it for years.

But honestly, JR2ALTA is right. It makes good business sense to just replace them. After all that time tearing the machine apart, may as well get a few extra bucks on the parts. However, you hate to do something, as a technician, that you know is gonna fail.

Are solenoids polarity sensitive? It occurs to me that sometimes I just wouldn't want to untangle the wires on some machines. But cutting and splicing would be a lot easier, if the solenoid is gonna be replaced instead of fixed.
Not these, but some solenoids are sensitive to polarity. Some DF's I've seen have a solenoid arrangement where the plunger is in a central position held by a magnet, with a coil on either side to move the plunger In or Out from that central position. Three wire connection.

There are a couple of Lexmark models that it is impractical to unstring 16" of wire harness back to the controller board. Lexmark includes two splice connectors (aka 2-Port Dry Environment, Single U-Element Insulation Displacement Connector 3M Displacement Connector,12-10 AWG,PK100 - 4YT69'|'562 BOX - Grainger) which are a bit large for the area you have to stuff them, and notoriously unreliable. I throw away those splices and solder/shrink the connections. The wires on the Lexies are color coded so you'd have to be even more stupid than me to get is mis-wired. =^..^=

I'm surprised more people just don't carry them, we can get em for 12 bucks which equals the time and hassle of repadding IMHO

Were it me, I wouldn't bend anything. I would remove the foam pad highlighted orange in this photo. Then I would get some sort of self-adhesive sticker that's not porous, like a left-over other-language control panel sticker left over from a setup, cut it to that size and stick it in the other's place. The metal actuator must not be allowed to touch the solenoid core or the actuator will magnetize and you'll get the exact same issue for a different cause. =^..^=

That's an interesting idea. I know a guy that used to use felt or cork, but this seems fool proof.

I just remove the exit flags.

yeah you might as well clean the exit fingers since you have to have the lid off to get to the solenoid... use a towel with rubbing alcohol on it to clean the finger and the solenoid where the plate hits..also clean the plate ... I also throw some tape on the area where the exit fingers hit the lid.

i use 2 layers of electrical tape, super-glued on one at a time. was originally using one layer, but that caused problems as it wasn't thick enough. goes without saying you need to let the glue dry before putting it back in.

i use the glue because the e-tape eventually will lose its adhesive properties and fall off. i've been using this method over 3 years on all model hp's that have the problem and haven't had a call back.

I never repad. I bend the metal so that the plate doesn't come so close to the magnet.

I started using the command strips, then, I bought a roll of double sided velcro (the "fuzzy" side only) from Amazon, but, electrical tape works too. Anything that makes the solenoid's metal flap not stick to the magnet will work. Whatever works best for you.

24# is fine for Tray 2 ... it can handle up to 32#.... the problem, like Lance said is the solenoid
