Hi everyone, my small church has a HP LaserJet M5035xs MFP (Q7831A). A year ago the formatter failed (stuck during self test before display turns on). I read that the BGA solder joints often go bad. I work at an electronics place so I ran it through a reflow oven. It worked! Yeah!
But now a year later same problem. So I decided to buy a refurbished formatter (hoping it will last more than a year). The replacement formatter makes the printer work but I get a Scanner failure 30.1.34 error. The scanner was fine before.
I followed the troubleshooting steps in the manual.
The scanner was working fine before the original formatter failed the second time. That's why I'm puzzled. Why would the scanner that was working now be bad???The tech at the store that sold me the replacement formatter said to replace the SCB but they didn't have one. I wonder if maybe the problem is in the formatter they sold me. Is it worth putting in another $200 for a SCB if I'm not sure that it will fix it.
A lot on the SCB looks ok. The power indicators on the SCB are all on. Voltages on the board all look ok. A single heartbeat LED is flashing. It homes the scanner bar on power up. It all appears normal except the communication to the formatter.
The machine did get moved back and forth in the office several times when it wasn't working. Maybe it was too much vibration?
I'm wondering if the replacement formatter could have actually had a problem that caused the scanner to not work. But I'm not sure how to tell that without trying another one. I'm thinking about ordering both from one place if I can find someone with both in stock for a reasonable price.
I'm hoping for guidance or recommendations from the experts on this forum?
Thanks, Dave

- Power cycle.
- Ribbon cable connectors reseated and I even checked continuity on all the pins.
- HDD gives me a directory listing so it seems ok.
- Replace scanner control board (SCB) or formatter.
