    toner leak in "new" cart

Bought a genuine HP Q6511X on eBay. Box was opened but the cart bag was sealed. Supposedly a "purchased in error" return.

Opening the bag, no loose toner and the cart looks clean. -- see photo.
Pulled the sealing tape out. Gave the cart a wiggle to spread the toner around, and puffs of toner from the left side.
Took it into the bathroom and kept shaking. Toner kept coming out for a while, probably only a few grams, but made a mess. -- 2nd photo.
I think no more coming out, so wiped it down, installed it and it worked. The first pages are a bit faint, but clean background.
(On previous cart had a mottled light grey background on all pages.) Have only printed 4 pages so far and seems improving, so fingers crossed.

The cartridge is obviously several years old. Can't see any manufactured date anywhere on the cart or box. Is there any way to tell?
The cart Serial Number: 5522135 from the status page.

So is this "leak" just a teething issue? Is there a seal where the tape came out that could be damaged? Can that be fixed (taped over, say)?
Will be checking it closely over the next days, but if something I can do to prevent it barfing toner all over the machine, would like to know.

If more leaks and unfixable I might try to return it, but a lot of hassle so leaving that aside for the moment.

    1) always shake/tilt/wiggle the cart BEFORE pulling the tape.
    2) check the end of the tape seal for missing foam seal ( can cause unwanted spacing between dev area *AIO* and drum )
    3) make sure the life has not expired
    4) bags can be resealed.

Well, yes, but I often do it towards the end of life to get a few more pages out. Never had any spray of toner.
Maybe when it's full it's a bad idea.

There was a little bit of sponge that came out with the tape... should it have come out? Is this fatal?

How? Could not find any dates on the cart or box.
I looked up a few mentions about lifetimes of toner carts, some said they were good for at least 15 years...
I was wondering if a seal had gone bad from age. The toner itself seems OK.
