HP M428fdw display panel went blank

Let me first start off by saying I am new to working on the HP printers, and just got thrown into them. I have been working on copier/MFPs and wide formats for years. I have been looking thru the HP troubleshooting manual for this model and don't see the particular issue described in the manual unless I used a different term that didn't ping the search parameters.

I went out to a customer account yesterday to look at a HP 428 small MFP printer with the scanner/document feeder on it. Customer said he would put pages in the feeder, hit start, and the machine would make a grinding noise and not feed the paper in. I tried and yes, it did exactly what he described. Like most small printers, this is in a very tight spot, almost impossible to work on. I wanted to see if there were any paper clips or staples stuck in the feeder, and on the front, when you open the document feeder cover, there is a release tab, so the black plastic feed module assembly can rotate up on to plastic pins, and I lifted it up to inspect. That's when the motor in the document feeder ran for a second, and I looked down at the OP panel to see if it was doing something, and the panel was completely blank, dead. There are 2 ribbon cables that connect to the feed module of the feeder. The bottom one appeared kinked so I flattened it out, and I reseated the top cable. No difference. I also took the cover off and reseated the cables on the formatter board, no change. I had the customer send a test print, and the machine will still print, but since the OP panel is dead it will not copy/scan/fax.

Has anyone had this happen, and why would it do it just by flipping an assembly up just to check for a jam or obstruction? I did see in the drive assembly, when I was able to pull the machine out a bit, on one of the top black plastic gears, some teeth were sheared off. I did order a document feeder/scanner assembly, and am waiting to hear back from other sources about maybe a formatter board. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
