Lexmark MX610 / Dell B3465 intermittent line on scans - it's not the slit glass

    Hello,
Here is what I have going on:

Line on some scans (never copies) when you look at a scanned document on the PC monitor.
Slit glass is clean, so it's not that.
Line is 2 7/8ths inches from the left side.
    Not always there though.
Most of the time it's black but sometimes it's pink and once it was blue.
It is plugged directly in the wall.
No interference seems to be the cause.
Does not do it from the glass.
Customer says the line can appear at first or sometimes not for a long time on larger scan jobs. But it eventually happens more as the machine is used a lot. Line is faint and gets bolder as the scans progress.
The white plate does have paint missing in spots but not where the line is showing up.

Questions: is this possibly electrical? A Board acting up? How hard to replace the feeder in case it's something with that? Customer is asking if it's worth putting money into. You know the drill!

    Thanks for any help.

Open and clean 'scan window". It is dirty, some hair or clip...

Usually, colored lines (you mention pink and blue) are an indication of a failing scan head. There's nothing you can really do except replace the scanning unit, if it's available.

Thank you very much for this info. Do you mean the ADF / top of machine? If so do you know how difficult this is to do? Does this happen very often with this model? Can I use a Lexmark MX610's ADF on a Dell B3465?

          40X9094 - Flatbed

It looks like you can. There is no B3465 specific manual from Dell. Dell provided the MX610 manual to techs as the repair manual. You might just find the plastics color may be different.

The following parts need to be removed to replace the flatbed (scanning unit):

          Diverter Cover
          Rear Cover
          Front Access Cover
          Left Cover
          Right Cover
          Controller Board Shield

After those are removed, it looks like you remove some cables and 6 screws around the scanner unit.

You are looking at $458.00 for the part plus labor and hoping this is the problem. Add profit to the part and labor and you are half way to the price of a new B3465.

I have worked on copiers for 37 years and can pull just about any copier apart and put it back together. Five years ago we picked up Lexmark and all that changed. I often need the manual to tear these down and would need it to replace this part.

Customer now considering getting new vs. repair, which is the usual sit back and wait situation. I'll update here if there is anything helpful to report.
