    Samsung scx 4520 copying problem

Hi there, my Samsung SCX 4520 has suddenly decided that it doesn't want to copy a whole A4 page. It leaves the last 2 cm or so blank. I have tried using the flatbed and feed copy options but both come out exactly the same. I ran a flatbed test with the lid open and noticed that the imaging unit didn't travel the full length of the scan area, it stopped short of the full travel by the amount that is missing on the copies. There is a small white tippex spot on the rod that the imaging unit travels along to indicate - I guess - the place where it should get to before returning. So what would anyong suggest has happened here? Is it a new belt that is needed or is it something far sinister?

The machine is 2006 and has only just started to show toner low so very very little use in that time. When not in use it has been covered at all times with a plastic sheet and is in an area which never gets hot or cold beyond 50 - 70F.

    Thank you in advance.

    Axxe

Edit - Tried using USB for direct printing and that function works fine with no blank area. Pointing towards a mechanical malfunction in the scanner department?

Could it be something simple, like the paper size being programmed for Letter (279.4mm) rather than A4 (297mm)? Perhaps a difference of 17.6mm? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Unfortunately not bc. Everything is for A4 and always has been and no settings have ever been entered or changed from day 1. It is definitely a scanner travel problem.

I only use it as a stand alone photocopier - it is not connected to a PC.

More ideas please before Mr Screwdriver comes out to play...

Another possibility. Is the void absent from the opposite end that shows the larger void?

The Samsung tabletop machines have very loose paper timing. To you, that means that the paper can feed up to 25mm late and not show a jam. In that case, often the paper feed rollers are just dirty or worn. Or the paper may be leading the image because of a registration clutch that sticks On all the time.

Now if the void is present at both ends I'm sticking with my initial impression, set to letter instead of A4. Don't just assume it is the same setting because you didn't change it. =^..^=

Slightly confused as to what you mean there, however the copy is not misaligned due to paper feed. It just is incomplete and if you re read my earlier post I have edited it to say that when I use the direct print from USB stick everything is fine. To me this indicates that there is no paper feed or size problem as the feed is used for both options (copy and printing), but that the scanning part of the copier process has gone bananas.

Just a note about me - I have over 30 years experience servicing and fixing all my own electronic/ electrical household items but this will be a first for a copier hence my appearance here seeking guidance as I often find others have had the same problem somewhere in the world and therefore can assist me in expediting a fix.

Thank you for your help so far...

Dear Sweet Jesus, I must be some kind of idiot...after the above text I became curious about Black Cat's continued paper setting direction. I have never been into the menus at all as it has always worked on A4 out of the box. Well, bugger me all the way to Christmas. Guess what BC? It had set itself to 'LETTER'. You were right all along. I re-set to A4 and all is well.

I most humbly apologise for not checking first your suggestion and assuming that it couldn't be that.

Kindest regards and warmest thanks for helping a blithering idiot.

We all have moments like this. Don't kick yourself too much.
You just needed a little nudge in the right direction. =^..^=
