    Aficio 2045 Scan software

Hello, i am new to using copiers and my folks recently got a used Aficio 2045 for their small business.

Now here's my question, i have installed the Twain drivers on win7 and i can scan from the copier. My problem is...If i have a book and i want to scan it so that i can print it whenever i need to without rescanning it what free software should i be using?

I did it so far with IrfanView but i scanned the book at 600 dpi because i wanted to be sure the quality was good. When i wanted to print what i scanned i realized i ended up with 150 Jpeg pictures. Darn, i wondered how to print them and i ended up printing one at a time manually, first the odds then the even ones because i needed to print double sided.

Second book i tried it differently, i scanned it as a multipage TIF image file. This time it was better at first sight till i saw i ended up with a 2.5GB TIF image and when i wanted to print my double sided copy the reverse page was upside down. OK i scanned it again this time i kept switching the book alternatively upside down since i couldn't get Aficio to print it normally (oh yeah my page was landscape oriented)

Now my question was, where can i find some tips and tricks on how to scan books using such a nice contraption (i love the Aficio, it's like the printer i always dreamed of having ) ) I mean with tips and tricks, what kind of freeware software could i use to make my mom's life easier when a client comes with a book....maybe some program that will save the scanned images as PDF file and how the heck do i set the printer to print the revers page not upside down.

I hope i was pretty coherent in my problem description and i hope you guys will go easy on me for posting such noob questions (i am pretty sure there are much easier solutions to the scanning process than how i did it but i just don't know which software i should be using and whether 300dpi should be enough)

Scanning at 600 dpi results in very large files. Try scanning at 300 dpi. If you're just scanning text, 300 dpi is more than enough. Maybe you could scan lower than 300 dpi to get a good scan. Just scan 1 page at different resolutions to see what resolution is satisfactory. If you want to print the scans on A4/LTR you don't need 600 dpi. When you print A4/LTR you can't see the difference between 300 dpi and 600 dpi. These high resolutions are only needed when you want to print on large format paper. When you want to print duplex, make sure you choose the right duplex option (long edge/short edge).
