I have colours out of snc on 3245c and have tried auto calibration and colour registration but it does not help, is there a trick i am missing that will sort it.

Make sure the PCUs and Developer units are in good shape: if they're near yield replace them. Check the condition of the transfer belt, especially looking for toner and debris on the roller at the tall side of the transfer belt: the ID sensors use the reflection off that roller as part of their reference reading. If the belt is worn, replace. If the roller is dirty then remove the belt (remembering the location of all the screws and putting them back in their original location) and clean it with alcohol, or some kind of chrome cleaner. Clean the ID sensors with some compressed air and see if that also gives you a better result.
Colour issues were fairly common on this family of machines and the preceding 22xxc series.
Nearly every time I had this issue(and the copy quality was okay, i.e. no lines/spots) was one of two different causes:
1) The transfer belt was trashed, so the sensor couldn't do a proper reading.
2) The transfer belt rides on a shiny roller on the far left upper side. If this roller gets dirty, the machine will fail to reflect the sensor signal properly, and will fail calibration.

The roller is very dirty, I have taken the belt off to get to the roller but it is pitted with rock hard toner, can you suggest the best way to clean this or has it had its day?
Go to any decent auto store and buy some chrome cleaner. A light coating of this and a little polishing will break down the toner. After you've polished it back to a nice shiny state use a little alcohol to remove any residual amounts of the chrome cleaner that may be lurking about.
If you have it, my work provides this pink fluid that just melts the toner off. Otherwise a combination of whatever solvents you carry, a green scrub pad, and lots of time should make it shiny. I've never had to replace the roller, so I have no idea how difficult it would be.
Fake edit: Just looked it up, the part seems to be very rare but one site was selling it for 50 bucks. Looks like you have to dissemble the entire unit to replace it though. P/N is B101-3902. Unless you are an independant, I'd suggest replacing the transfer assy.
