I Refuse Not to Be Heard’: Georgia in Uproar Over Voting Meltdown
Long lines and malfunctioning voting machines marred statewide primary elections in Georgia, renewing attention on voting rights there.
Georgia’s statewide primary elections on Tuesday were overwhelmed by a full-scale meltdown of new voting systems put in place after widespread claims of voter suppression during the state’s 2018 governor’s election.
Scores of new state-ordered voting machines were reported to be missing or malfunctioning, and hourslong lines materialized at polling places across Georgia.
Some people gave up and left before casting a ballot, and concerns spread that the problems would disenfranchise untold voters, particularly African-Americans. Predominantly black areas experienced some of the worst problems.
With Republican-leaning Georgia emerging as a possible battleground in this year’s presidential election and home to two competitive Senate races, the voting mess rattled Democratic officials and voters, with some blaming the state’s Republican governor and secretary of state for hastily instituting a new voting system without enough provisional ballots in case the voting machines did not function.
“It is a disaster that was preventable,” Stacey Abrams, the Democrat who narrowly lost the disputed 2018 governor’s race, said in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “It is emblematic of the deep systemic issues we have here in Georgia. One of the reasons we are so insistent upon better operations is that you can have good laws, but if you have incompetent management and malfeasance, voters get hurt, and that’s what we see happening in Georgia today.”
San Diego defies calls to 'defund the police,' but it 'won't be business as usual' in California's second largest city
Never thought I would say this, but, Way To Go San Diego!! Looking at things in a common-sense manner. Instead of defunding, they upped the budget by 27 million for their police department! You can’t just defund or disband police. You need to vet the officers a little more thoroughly and ensure there’s more oversight into their daily actions.
As for the others who are still moving forward with defunding.....it’s the single stupidest thing they could do!
And most who are for defunding their police, just want to HAND OUT FREE MONEY to black communities! Where’s everyone else’s free money? Why is it just black communities that should receive the money stolen from police departments?? Don’t they know that doing this will probably dissuade even more blacks from getting jobs?? Why get a job when you’re going to get handouts for your skin color??
It amazes me!
"It’s not just about taking away money from the police, it’s about reinvesting those dollars into black communities," Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, told WBUR.
Amanda Chisholm contended that police did not need additional funding. Instead, she said, “We need funding taken from the police department and given directly to people living in slum conditions."
Instead of pulling funds from the police department, the San Diego council created a new city Office of Race and Equity and increased its rent relief fund from $5 million to $15.1 million, The Union-Tribune reported.
