Here’s a jarring thought experiment: If the United States had done merely an average job of fighting the coronavirus — if the U.S. accounted for the same share of virus deaths as it did global population — how many fewer Americans would have died?

The answer: about 145,000.

That’s a large majority of the country’s 183,000 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths.

No other country looks as bad by this measure. The U.S. accounts for 4 percent of the world’s population, and for 22 percent of confirmed Covid-19 deaths. It is one of the many signs that the Trump administration has done a poorer job of controlling the virus than dozens of other governments around the world.

Wonder if BLM is down in Louisiana helping any of those Black people down there that are out of home, and work, and food? Doubt it.

The conspiracy theory that President Donald Trump pushed Monday that a plane “almost completely loaded with thugs” had been set to disrupt the Republican National Convention was almost identical to a rumor that went viral on Facebook three months ago.

In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump claimed that “we had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend, and in the plane it was almost completely loaded with thugs, wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms, with gear and this and that.”

He then claimed the matter was “under investigation right now.”

There is no evidence of any such flight. When Ingraham asked for more information about the flight, the president said, "I'll tell you sometime." He then alleged the people had been headed to Washington to disrupt the RNC.

Before mentioning the uniformed men who allegedly boarded the plane, Trump claimed that there are “people that are in the dark shadows” and “people that you haven’t heard of” controlling Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

U.S. budget deficit tripling to US$3.3T this year: CBO

The U.S. federal budget deficit will soar to a record US$3.3 trillion this fiscal year in the wake of massive government spending aimed at mitigating the economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s latest tally.

Even so, the shortfall is smaller than the non-partisan agency’s April projection of US$3.7 trillion. In 2019, the gap was US$984 billion. The updated budget estimate, issued Wednesday and which incorporates legislation enacted through Aug. 4, also showed the U.S. deficit will total US$1.8 trillion in fiscal 2021.

The projected deficit for this year would equate to 16 per cent of gross domestic product, up from 4.6 per cent in 2019 and the largest since World War II. U.S. government outlays this fiscal year will jump to US$6.6 trillion, the CBO estimated as lawmakers scrambled to put in place fiscal backstops to preserve jobs and companies after state-ordered shutdowns of non-essential businesses.

The resulting economic recession is also being reflected on the other side of the nation’s fiscal ledger. Revenue is projected to fall to US$3.3 trillion this year from almost US$3.5 trillion in 2019.

A rapidly expanding government deficit means more U.S. borrowing, and the CBO projects debt held by the public will increase to US$33.5 trillion at the end of 2030, or 109 per cent of GDP. It will exceed GDP starting in the next fiscal year.
