Re: Ricoh Firmware Update Tool!! Oh wait, it doesn't work.

Thanks to all who have generously contributed their time and knowledge.

Additional details for anyone that is using this as a source for their own problem. Any firmware changes will have to be done using an SD card, and not just any SD Card, an SD Card of 2Gb or less (SDSC). These are using and old interface. Old SD Reader cannot read or recognize (SDHC) cards even if they were formatted with a smaller partition.

Yes good point, a small SD card is needed. you would think Ricoh would have changed to accept larger cards by now.

Did you get the machine updated?

They have but with the 03s a 2GB or smaller works best. And then not all 2GB cards are the same. Older models worked best with a 1GB or 512K card. And of course Ricoh is always willing to sell you one that is the right size for about 3 times what you can find them for elsewhere.

This is correct. Even on the latest IMC range they don’t accept an SDHC card. (You can however update via USB pen)

My current 2gb SDSC popped a e24 error. Card Access Error, Reinsert, or Replace. I have ordered a new SDSC 2gb, but maybe a smaller 1gb or 512mb would be a better option. We'll see.

Thanks for all who have given of their time and talents.

I'll update at the beginning of the week.

Stay away from the 512mb cards; they may be too small if you run any package firmware.

Just today I downloaded the “all” firmware package for the IM C300. The zip file is 644mb; I’ve not yet extracted the .pkg file from it, but it will obviously be larger than that.

I'll update at the beginning of the week.
So I found a 512mb and loaded the software. For my machine, Copying the Firmware file into the root directory, won't work, the machine ignores the SD card and just boots as normal. Using Romdata/D147/"firmware folder"/ did get the machine to recognize and go into firmware update. But it still popped a e24 error.

Then I realized that 2 generous souls had sent me a firmware file, however they were not the same. For my problem, the firmware that ends in 7587 doesn't seem to work. The File type was also ".RFU".
What does work, For my Machine, is the Zip file that ends with 7588. The file type is ".FWU".

KenB did say the 512mb may be too small for the newer IM machines, the single Firmware file that I had didn't use a quarter of the 512mb. It was only 27mb. But your firmware may be different, so plan accordingly.

After all my mistakes, and I got to the Update screen, It took a few times for the machine to respond to the Update button. It ran.

    Phase 1 complete.

Phase 2 the Ricoh Firmware Update Tool

After the stock firmware was installed the Update tool status changed. and allowed for the update process.
I was able to update and now it shows as current.

    Rebooted and checked the Firmware:

Phase 3 find out what now doesn't work.

    Thanks for all who helped.

As far as I can tell none of the other firmware files were changed.

RFU is for remote Firmware Unit. It is installed using WIM.

That model machine boots up very slow, I always turn off java if it's not being used, change SP 5730 from 1 to 0.

Then the firmware update starts a lot sooner, otherwise you have to wait quite a while at the firmware screen.

It looks like the update tool did not work very well, your firmware is still old. You may need to obtain the new package firmware and then update it with a larger SD card.
