I'm going to look at a Laserjet 4100 with a "40 EIO" error. What is it? I have no technical infor on this model.
hp site says to press "go" to clear message and continue printing. "connection has been broken between printer and EIO card". you may want to make sure connection is good between the two.

Replace the JetDirect card (probably the 615N). These fail on a regular basis. The replacement units hold up well but the cost is high for a nic.
The new machines have a much improved nic and I have yet to replace one.

If the JetDirect is a 615n type card, go to the HP site. These cards are on a product recall.
