We will be installing our first machine with a Fiery controller here in the near future. We have never seen a need to use a Fiery, but this customer has one on their Xerox and wants one for the C654e we are quoting. Can anyone share their experience setting one up, things to watch out for etc? Also, is it possible to print through the Fiery and scan through the regular print controller, or do you have to set up print and scan using just the Fiery. I will be doing the online training for the Fiery, but any help or advice from techs in the field is much more valuable to me.

Love the Fiery on production color machines, find it excessive on Office machines as most users will never use it as intended..IMHO..have the customer provide 2 drops, or a dumb hub and run cables to the Fiery and the Emperon separately. In this config, if something happens to the Fiery, they will still be able to print via the embedded controller. This config also allows to use the Emperon for scanning without having to pass through the Fiery. I can't over stress the importance of teaching the user/keyop the proper calibration procedures, and setting up color profiles. This will come back to haunt you when they discover that the job the ran 6 months ago doesn't look the same as the job they are re running today. If you have a production specialist, have the customer spend a few hundred bucks for his/her time to teach these basics. One more thing, the fiery does not produce color any better that what the MFP can already deliver, but they now have the ability to do spot color, pantone matching, command workstation, hot folders, and many other tools that the Emperon does not offer. If all they are doing is printing out PDF and word documents the Fiery is not necessary. Emujo

Hi progoffice.

Yes, my standard installation with Fiery is to have the Fiery and the Emperon controler both atached to the network.
Sometimes you have to use a little desktop-switch, if walloutlet has only one connector.
We decided, to have a 4port switch and minimum 3 ethernet lines in our service cars every time availiable.
If it runs perfect, sell it to your customer as service, not as a hint.
Remove the black short cross-over ethernetline between Fiery and machine and save it.
Cable the lines like described by emujo.
In Fiery-Setup under Network-IP-config you have to disable the point "Apply IP adress to machine".
Dont forget, to give Emperon and Fiery different fixed adresses.
Now you can use the Fiery-Tools and Software for high quality printing at Fiery-Adress.
Much easier now is to open Emperon with your browser and enter there the Email/SMB scan data and Targets.
Most of my customers have than 4 printer drivers installed in there printer bar.
PS and PCL over Fiery and PS and PCL over Emperon.
The reason is, sometimes a document to print is corrupted, but one of the drivers works(accept the corrupted data).
Mostly the last, that you try. ;-)

In medical environment its more important, the printjobs are collected by Fiery,
while technician is servicing the machine itself. If he finished his job,
the output tray will soon be filled from their daily work.
Here i cable high power from the wall outlet direkt to Fiery, not from the outlet
of the back of Machine.

One Point has to be cleared with customer:
Is he using a ES-1000 or ES-2000 Spectrometers for Fiery calibration?
Than the new Fiery Color tools will work fine.
The old type Densitometers will no more work under CWS 5.x

I've been playing with the Fiery the past few days. I've got it set up in the office so that both print controllers can operate separate from one another. Is it advised to set the driver up for these locally or shared on a server? Does it make a difference when it comes to job processing time? I guess my question is, does the Fiery print controller process a print job any different than the Emperon? Does it send the job directly to the Fiery print server, or does the PC/Server have to process it first like it does with the standard controller. Just trying to streamline the whole set up process in my head before I set it up in a few weeks.

My next task is learning how to calibrate it in case the color is off.

Thanks again for the help guys.

Do not expect uniformity across a large print run as far as color is concerned. the office products do not maintain toner mix levels very well. and they never check output quality.
