Morning,

Just wondering why 90% of the ads I am seeing are to do with Russian and Ukranian dating sites. As I am accessing the site now from a company device over a VPN, I can guarantee I have never Google searched those terms. It is inevitable that I will be searching / using the forum at a customer site who will notice the adverts and a complaint will soon follow. Can something be done about it please.

Posted a week ago, no answer. Now an Oriental bird with large baps splashed either side of the forum home screen. Please do something about this or I am going to be unable to use the forum at work.

Sounds like the very familiar cross scripting website hack.
A web site harmless URL or advert image might redirect your current web page to a known DNS spoofing web site, which has java-script hacks. Something like a games, free download or porn site, which are known for illicit activities. The spoof hack first comes about from a web click "404 page not found error." Your Telco/ISP then redirects the page not found to an advert server ie. amazon or google adverts etc. Google or amazon then allows another 3rd party to use that 404 page visit to run "advertisement links" on your current web page. It's funny to watch companies like amazon and google profiling bots (brain-ware) trying to overlay the same image advert space within your current pages. I believe it is one of the reasons why web pages load real slow, as there is a lot of URL overlays happening from competing advert companies. You can check the advert competition DNS scramble by blocking one of the advert companies. You will then see an other layer of advertisements coming from a different advert company server trying to overlay your DNS. It can be a real bull run to own your DNS cache...;)

An advert scripted attack continuously places false URL's "404 page not found error" in your current web pages, which means your "Telco" continously passes the redirect over to amazon or google ads, who passes that onto other 3rd party companies, and the cycle continues. If you some how received/clicked an illicit URL you will recieve profiling adverts (brain-ads) which will show your preferred interest or demographic. If the false URL contains, games links you will get game adverts. If the false URL contains porn you will get porn advertisement, etc... I won't get into hackers placing tracking pixel encryption in the advert images, which I believe might be returned to the place of origin.

I personally can tolerate the soft-porn(skimpy clothed women) advertisements on the workshop PC, but it's not very appropriate when the grand children come to visit. I find I have to delve into the firewall and try to block out the latest corrupt DNS cache spoofs. I can show you what to look for when you are getting DNS spoofed URL's in your web pages. I also get active IP6 DNS redirect entries in my workshop PC DNS cache, an I have IP6 mostly disabled.

In part you may need to beef up your personal firewall to block the DNS spoof hacks.
It won't remove the js_hacks but it will block the adverts an most other inappropriate rubbish.

Apology for the long rant.....

And it continues. Just installed Adblock Plus.

You can install Opera browser, I believe it has built in add blocker. It's light and fast for mobile devices also.

i would do a FULL viri/malware/spyware scan of your systems. (boot sector also)

I don't have any ads like you describe. You are infected.

I am currently using Adblock Plus version 3.6.3 with Firefox 69.0.3 and Malware Bytes Anti Malware for virus protection. ABP blocked 11 ads loading this page. The only things not block were actual CTN advertisers.

Well at least this forum is free. Who knows maybe this site gets paid to allow Google ads? Anyway I don't see a problem as I'm never on this site that long. I pop in and out throughout the day. So CTN would never be on my screen just sitting there for grandkids to see, etc.

It's like taking a crap, do your business and get out!

Wanted to add that my daughter recently contacted a college "on her computer" through our home wireless network and now ads for that college show up on my computer when I'm on this site. So I think google bots look for what has been searched on a network and blasts anyone on that network with similar ads from that search. So sounds like someone in your company must of searched Russian & Ukraine dating or porn sites....Be careful if you ask the boss about it, may blow his cover. ha-ha

Google's TOS preclude us from discussing the matter but a Wikipedia search for Pay-Per-Click will shed some light on how a good portion of internet advertising works.

Yes, that's my understanding as well, depending on how your company's internet is configured, everyone inside the firewall appears to have the same IP address outside the firewall. "Big Data" is still capable of knowing a little bit about individual users behind the firewall from browser cookies, etc... but if you're blocking cookies and similar, you'll just be lumped in with the rest of the users with that same outward facing IP, including your boss who may or may not be looking for a date.

Exactly, don't go in until you need to go, get out as soon as you're done.

Hello, as you can see I do my best to help generate donations to this site and not my pockets.
How much would it cost to run this site ad free?
The BBS I was a mod and later an admin. We paid dues to keep the status and it was enough to cover the cost of hosting and site upgrades without any ads that were not directly paid for and appeared on the main page only.
I will keep trying to drive up contributors regardless but if there is a number to hit to have this site pay\click ad-free I'll step up my efforts in another forum catagory as well as I have both konica and Kyocera acceas.
That should double the amount of donations.
Of course if this is not feasible for any reason I still won't stop my campaign to help drum up support.

Thanks for reading.

One last thing, there are a lot of zombie threads, does anyone have the ability to lock threads?
It's weird to get notifications for threads that have long since perished and should be put to rest for good.
Just my .02

This attitude deserves nothing but my pure respect, but you probably should have known it so far.
We help as we can, personally I don't expect anything more than CTN is up and running, but imho you've got a valid point here.

yeah, i used to help out on smarka years ago and i liked the whole BBS for techs idea.
then i was lucky to be on staff on a watercooling/overclocking BBS for a long time.
then i found this place :)
before i donated here i didnt block the ads, now i do because im never gonna click on any, im just a working shmuck for a huge dealer.
20 ads just opening the first thread i saw, slows the site down to dial-up speed blocking or not.
anyway, thank you for the kind words.
