Hello all. This is my first post and hopefully I can get some assistance.

I sat down to print tonight and about 5 minutes after I turned on the printer, a loud vibration began in the top of the printer ie. in the section that you lift up to put the paper on the glass for copying. The specific area the vibration is occurring is to the left all the way to the end where four white rollers are. It sounds like a jack hammer. Does anyone know what is causing this? It doesn't stop me from printing.

That's quite a horrendous noise from an ADF. Sounds a bit like a guide plate is bent and scraping against one of the driven roller shafts.

I had a Kyocera making a worse sound than that once. They had been scanning documents that had been mailed to them that had some of the sticky silicone goop on the flap. Quite a lot of that sticky stuff got adhered to the idlers just before the white plate, and two of those idlers would not turn. It was not a simple disassembly, but simple to diagnose. The sound clip does help, thanks. =^..^=

Why would the rollers be running?
Noting i know about will make a noise like that and not code out.
As if something cant get to home position.

That is a series issue, does it make the noise if you're not printing?

99% of what I do is printing I don't remember the last time I copied anything. So I am surprised that the noise is coming from that area. Any suggestions as to how I can fix it? Do I need to pull it apart? Do I need a technician?

The noise begins about 20 seconds after the machine is turned on and has completed its "booting" phase - for lack of a better word.

Check if the retraction motion isn't somehow looped. Its driven by the front M4 motor behind the near side front cover. There is a cam mechanism. Never seen it doing this, but you never know until you ope it up. Be brave take a screwdriver and just open it like a box of chocolates on X mas.

or

loosen belt on drive transport rollers and its sliping on drive gears

or

you have somthing gunged up on the read transprt roller and is doing what you see.

If you don't use this machine to make many copies, just unplug the DF. Turn off machine, unplug from the wall and disconnect DF from main body. You still use the glass for copying.

How long does the noise continue for? I would think it should only try to run for a few seconds before giving up, and then give an error code.

Apologies for my absence. When the noise starts, I put the machine in Power Save mode and it stops. However, today I did that, left the machine for an hour, and when I returned and took it out of Power Save mode, I got a C8101 error. There is also a message which says I can continue if I disable the automatic document feeder. When I press continue, it says to "turn the sub power switch off and on". Is that the main power switch? I'm not sure.

Edit: Found the switch. The DF is now disabled. No more noise.

C8101: Before reading pressure welding alienation mechanism

This code means that the reading roller pressure/retraction motor (M4) in the document feeder is not rotating at the correct time. There might be a problem with the read roller sensor (PS6), or the DF controller.

If you wanted the document feeder to work, I would suspect the DF controller board, which controls that motor.
If you don't care if the DF works, it is currently isolated and won't bother you again.

Get Philips #2. Lift the ADF. On very top left hand as you can now see the under side roller there is 2 screws for that ADF cover(front handle) just unscrew it and the cover comes off. Now have a look if there isn't something that could cause the sensor to be blocked. (Dust, circles from pre punch paper, staples, paper clips)
To get the ADF running perform trouble reset. Procedure is on forum. Good luck and have a nice weekend.
