How long can you store an unopened bizhub c451/550/650 imaging unit on the shelf without damaging the quality of the unit.

I would think way longer.

This model has been around for at least 8 years, and we still have un opened units sitting in the shelf that work when needed. Just be sure to shake it up really well and don't store on the end. Emujo

<3 years is optimal. anything more is less optimal but functional.

I've seen machines running with initial units from 1st setup still running fine these days so the lifetime you can expect is probably much higher compared to some guaranteed marketing statements.

If you get a bad IU out of the box what would the copy quality look like. I had black IU out of the box and it was dark looks more like a drum is bad and not DV.

Anytime you replace an IU or transfer belt you should reset and stabilize then do all the gradations.
If you just pop an IU in its not calibrated
