This is an area of the business that I am weak on and need an assist.
Here's what going on, I have a customer who wants to buy this CPP550.
It has the controller but no monitor or key board.
I need to verify that this controller will do variable data. I am planning to visit
this customer to check this out. The person that used to run the machine has
left the business and no one else knows if that software is on the controller.
I'm not even sure of what to look for as far as recognizing the program.
Does anyone know the name of the program or how I can verify it is on board the controller?
Then I would need to figure out how to use it.
The customer who wants to buy this machine has a BHC6500 that is trashed and the controller for
that one has a monitor and keep board. Would that controller work on the CPP machine?
If it's not on either can I still purchase the software? They say they're running an older operating system but have not
told me what it is. I know still some questions I need to answer so I can post that info.

Thanks

CREO or Fiery?
both do VDP

Desert Rat

That is one of those questions I need to answer tomorrow. I know that neither is the creo. They usually have creo printed on them and as I recall
neither of them were marked as such.
I'll have more info tomorrow.

Thanks for the fast reply

saying does variable data is vague at best.

what are the clients needs / requirements? do they need to run PPML files? or just forms/backgrounds and overlay addresses from a pdf or word file?

Recommend external fiery at the least... internal will do forms/backgrounds but wont handle ppml.

monitor and keyboard for internal fiery, is not needed as you can use command workstation remotely.

the embedded (attached to rear) fiery does vdp.

Synthohol and Methogod,
Thank you for your interest. I'm not sure what is a PPML file?
This is where I'm weak. I was never trained on the computer end of the
machine. As an indy I focus more on the machine. Would a good IT tech
be able to help?
I will check out what the customers needs are today. This is a big print company
and right now they send this kind of work out. They want to do this stuff in house.
They are looking at this machine as a way of capturing more of their customers
business.
So this is a starter machine, something not to expensive just to test the water,
sort of speak.

I have a long day ahead of me going from one end of town to the other. Phoenix is so spread
out.

Thanks again, I will post more info at the end of the day.

Synthohol and methogod,
The info on the controller for the Cpp550 sez it is Microsoft XP embeddded OS. I was able to get a keyboard, mouse and monitor for the tower.
The screen sez Micorsoft XP embedded. The admin password was set and I could not gain access.

Does anyone know the factory default password for this model?

The LD6500-No name on the outside. I believe it works with command work station but the customer does not have that. They have some kind of
mac computer.

No real stickers on the back of either of them.
I'm inclined to think that the cpp550 controller is still working.
with the machine will be the one they use. I did call the old
operator and ask him if he knew of any passwords or variable data programs. Nope

any advice?

Methogod,
Thank you for the password. I will give it a try.
What photos would you want to see?
Guess I neglected
to post the controller for the CPP550. It has IKON on the front of it
and on the back it sez Fiery server Pro 80-03. There is a part number
it is 45063229. I can see I will need to go back and power up the
Pro 80 again and try the password. No problem.

Thanks again

Synthohol and Peter,
Thank you for the leads to get Command Work Station. I will get it today.

Thanks again

Ok, I was able to log into the controller and found it already has command work station 4 installed.
They are both using Macs.

I have a picture of the files I think are for VDP.
I'm told that an independent software may be easier to use.
The customer buying this will have to figure this out. Is there some
place to look for help for them?

Thanks

Would reload the most recent pro80 software (should be 3.0A), its two ISO disks, make the printer drivers work best...

what type of client? is it a print shop? Work flow needs to be determined before helping with a specific job.

Version 3.0 is windows 7 based and the fiery would née a bios and ram upgrade.
It's just a printer. Xp works fine on a machine that has been discontinued for a bit now.
Just my .02

i have pro 80 on C6501 running 3.0A, how do i upgrade it to windows 7? thought it was xp embedded only....

Synthohol

its a few hundred dollars, its an upgrade kit with a new BIOS and a ram upgrade.
may be discontinued at this point. its now a dinosaur.

Desert Rat

I'm not even sure what to ask at this point? I would need to upgrade the controller to the 3.0a kit.
What about what's on there now? Would that work?
This is over my pay grade.
I know a clever IT tech here in town. I will ask him if he can accomplish this task.
Any idea where the software up grade could be found?

The client is a big print company with big presses and large rolls of paper. Probably a web press.
I'm sure they have other presses also.
I have a customer that is running variable data on 2 C7000's but he is using a creo controller.
I will talk to him may be he can explain it to me.
This sounds like a mail merge file but more complicated.

Thank you for all the information. All of you have been helpful.

why is an upgrade required?
XP on the tower Fiery works fine.
does the Fiery have a FACI kit?

methogod

if they are printing directly to the rip using PS driver, having version 1.01 will be alot of issues with VDP. If they use command workstation less issues, imho.

Synthohol

i have 2.1 as well if it needs it.

Desert Rat

Synthohol,
What is an FACI kit?
More than likely they will be printing to the fiery which does have CWS 4 on board.
I was talking with someone about this and it sounds like it would be easier for them
just to get a program on their computer that would do the VDP and send it over to
the fiery as one print job and then RIP it for the printer?
I just don't know enough about this end of the biz.

It sounds like it will do it tho, so I'm going to sell the machine.

Thanks I'll let you know how it turns out

One last question, how can I determine what version is on this controller?

DR

Synthohol

It's on the fiery configuration page top left area

methogod

This customer currently has a controller for their LD6500 that does not run. Can this just be hooked up
to the IKON CPP550 and work as expected?
They have Harlequin on this controller and they run the Apple G5 and they have a G4 also. I'm told that
Harlequin has a variable data program on board. True?

The controller on the CPP550 is not hooked up to the machine. No power for the machine. I have been using
a key board and mouse to explore this unit. So I can not print the config page.

Thanks

Synthohol

you kind of can.
if you can log into the controller with CWS print the config page, it will fail but right button click on the failed job and select process and hold. then go in the hold queue and preview the file.

Synthohol,

I was talking about the controller that was hooked up to the LD6500. The 6500 does pass paper but their is no output device
and it jams in the exit because the rollers are badly worn. This machine was mis represented to the customer from another
source. And it needs lot of work in order for it to perform the way they want.
The controller for the LD6500 does work. I just wanted to know if that controller will work with the Ikon Cpp550?

what is the model? are they pro 80s?

Desert Rat
04-09-2018, 04:05 AM
I did not see a name on the outside of the controller they used on their LD6500. It's in
a black case. I may have time to power that one up to see if I can get a clue.

Thanks
