Any info would help.A few of our customers have rolled back this week's Microsoft security update and it has worked. I think there's some documentation on the web regarding this issue and I believe Microsoft knows about it.

confimring that the recent SMB protocol errors are related to a set of windows updates that were included in the January 2019 rollout. The following 2 updates are creating the issues, KB4480960 and KB4480970. We have been succsfull in uninstalling KB4480970 only and scan to folder has been working correctly after this. These can be uninstalled from the programs/installed updates. The computer will reboot after install. To not have the hotfix reinstall, proceed to windows update, and view available updates, uncheck the KB4480970 and this show not allow the update to re-process.

Here's what we did to make it work. When entering the user name, enter "//computer name/user name"

Kyocera. Thought it may work with others too. One of my coworkers says it fixed a KonicaMinolta too, but he also had to create a new user and folder.

After update if you are getting this> "Server Connection Error" then do this> Go to Control Panel>Turn windows features ON/OFF>Telnet Client=un check, Telnet Server=uncheck, or SMB>Telnet Client/Telnet Server= uncheck
apply and restart.
Then try sending.

So I sent the original question in this thread. Removing the update definitely works, but id prefer to just make the adjustment needed for smb. Will your suggestion definitely work? I will be trying it tomorrow.

Here's what we did to make it work. When entering the user name, enter "//computer name/user name"

The issue in this month's Windows 7/Server 208 R2 patches are related to back end authentication issues.

You'll have issues if your scanning is set using one, or both, of the following:

1. Scan destination is set using an IP address instead of a host name
2. You're using a local account, instead of a domain account, to authenticate to the share with the account used also being an administrator on the PC or server hosting the share

An update has also been released to fix the underlying NTLM issue: Microsoft Update Catalog (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4487345)

Currently, it's only available from the Windows Update Catalog site, it hasn't been pushed to workstation Windows Updates or WSUS.

No need to remove update. Just restore the changes made by update in SMB and file sharing.

I just had this issue come up last Friday, customer called in saying her scanning to PC was not working. It's a one PC office that has been working fine for months. She was scanning fine all day Wednesday, then first thing Thursday morning it errors out with a "Forward TX Error" under job list > details.

I tried everything I could think of, I figured something was installed that she didn't know about, didn't think to mess with the Windows updates. I ended up just setting her PC to scan to FTP using the old FTP utility. Next time she calls in for service (probably when her IP changes and FTP stops working) I'll look for these updates and try to get her back on SMB.

We are done with SMB scanning. It isn't reliable enough anymore. We are switching everyone to email scanning. Once it is setup it is much easier for user to create new one-touches.

Emphasis on "once it is set up"

I have far too many IT departments who haven't got a clue as to what info/settings they need to supply us in order to get scan to email working, usually those are the ones using office365 or gmail for scanning . But yes, once set up, it is the best method for scanning IMO.

Agree with this...

My simple fix this last week for the tons of scanning calls that came in was to change their scans account that i created for smb scanning from an administrator to a standard user. Temporary get around. (scans accounts shouldn't have been set to an admin anyways).

Scan to HDD, User Boxes are more reliable in my opinion. There is no need of internet and user will not have to open mail accounts and then download from there. Its quite simple and reliable. :o

Here is a fix. I had a client with a Kyocera machine that stopped scanning to folder last week. This video shows how to fix the problem

I am glad when the customer is using Gmail, it is relatively easy to set up. Office365 on the other hand is like most other microsoft products, unnecessarily complicated and not user friendly.

This right here!! From hence forward, when installing a KM box at a customer location I go straight to User Box and install Pagescope Box Operator on each workstation. Twain scanning is far more reliable than SMB or email scanning.

My customers and their IT department would laugh at me if I suggested this. Scanning to a shared folder (or individual shared folders) on a server is much more convenient, especially for high-profile customers such as attorneys offices, government/state accounts, etc. which is all I really service. They won't even allow you to touch their computers let alone install some twain software.
