customer said receipients of faxes complain that instead of it printing on A4 it print as A5. almost as if its for a booklet. (Shared album - Rohan Richardson - Google Photos (https://photos.app.goo.gl/8EYfyBnTgJe8ajNj9))

it copies and scans to email/smb in portrait (Shared album - Rohan Richardson - Google Photos (https://photos.app.goo.gl/ddsp77afvjiNo4Hd6))

the original feed direction option has a note on it that "This is not appled to fax transmissions" and sure enough it doesnt. (Shared album - Rohan Richardson - Google Photos (https://photos.app.goo.gl/ekJ5KBto4ac3y5j3A))

Im stuck as to why it only effects faxes. its obviously not the doc feeder or it would be a problem with all documents.

only fix atm is to just scan things as landscape.

We had this on a 4e model a few years ago. Check the mixed original sensors, the information from KM was that when scanning fax originals the ADF runs in mixed original mode.

Set your fax tray to an A4 tray and lock it ..sounds like they are loading the wrong media in tray
you have several worldwide options for "fax back" even the input can be from phone...test it before you leave.. have customer test it.. have them sign paper stating so.. charge them the next time they F up.

I would initialise the fax setting data and test it from scratch also try the other sensor table under service mode :)

I intialised fax kit and so far so good.

I'm surprised that helped and bit skeptical but time will tell. But it went from always portrait to always portrait so fingers crossed

Images like this were extremely common on the Sharp Tiger and Jupiter series's. Those particular machines used original tray guides to detect width and a gravity operated flag to detect length. The length sensor was imperfectly balanced and might stick down even without paper. So the DF tray detects ledger, and since most faxes don't print ledger the image is rotated 90 degrees and reduced 64% like you see in your sample. Copies were unaffected, since for copies the DF counts microseconds of time as the original passes to re-calculate the original length. Faxes rely only on the tray size.

On those specific Sharp DFs the simple solution was to add some counterweight to the flag. The standard counterweight was a 4mm x 6mm pan head plastic screw. I carried 4mm x 12mm pan head screws for this situation.

Other DFs can experience similar symptoms when the length sensor misreads the original length in the tray.

Another reason you might see these images is if your enduser stacks piles of LTR originals on the right side of the original tray extension, while scanning LTR originals at the left side. Since the length sensor remains covered all originals are detected as ledger. =^..^=

I have seen initialising the fax kit fix some crazy issues that you would normally blame a customer for such as no dial tone or no answering incoming faxes. It is my first goto whenever a fax is acting weird :)

I have seen a simple cleaning of the read sensor underneath feeder cause this issue multiple times. The same sensor can and will cause 6605 jams as well. Doesn't always make sense to me why sometimes it causes one issue and other times the other.. But I tested thoroughly before and after to confirm that it does.

Start a fax, immediately click cancel before it sends. It will then print you a report showing the image either portrait or landscape. I believe the sensor being dusty makes the machine think the paper is a hair longer than it really is. It doesn't unflag in time.

Do you often encounter this problem? Ask for help from a photographer who has a long work experience. He is a professional and most likely has faced such a problem more than once. I work as a photographer and often ask for help from Orlandos Best Portrait & Wedding Photographer (https://www.wanderlustportraits.com). It's just that this photographer has significantly more work experience than I do and has four times as many clients as I do. Do not hesitate to ask for help from people, as we learn throughout our lives and there is nothing to be ashamed of, we want to be better.
