I have always formatted hard drives and have always worked quietly after formatting

you intend to reload the software with the flash card?

quiet I am able to do everything

run the diagnostics..

Go to [Service Mode] -> [Sate Confirmation] -> [HDD Adjust] -> [Memory Check]

If they get a NG, replace parts. (See below).

WORK0 = Replace Standard Memory (DIMM1).

WORK1 = Replace Expanded Memory (DIMM2).

FILE0 = 1 Memory of ASIC200 installed in the MFP board.

There isn't any system software to load after a format. Phil may be thinking of a different machine.

could there be some characters like (_) which are not supported in the 4series and the dpsw needs to be modified?

If it was able to scan via FTP prior to the format there is likely a setting that got cleared. Go back and check all your settings.

what settings are erased with formatting?

Clearly you need a manual to start, and no, it's not just a matter of formatting HDD when machine errors.

hell I've been able to clear MANY error codes without reformatting a HDD..

don't think the OP has told us WHICH error codes popped...

he just might have made a BIG MESS from a simple problems.

SMB1/SMB3 issue?

Hans

i assume he is using FTP due to the SMB support being phased out for security. plus i doubt email is a option due to SSL/TLS so really FTP is the only option.

you could be half asses and scan to the PC that does work then SMB share from that PC to all the others

Could be wrong but I was told that if you use one PC with SMB1 enabled just to scan from older models, one cannot access this PC shared folder from other SMB1 disabled PCs in the network.

yeah but he would be using FTP to the one PC that mysteriously works to then share presumably with SMB2 to all other PC's

I may be worng here..but if you format the HDD you also delete any installed SSL certs..Possibly this is why he has the dreaded "it worked before I did this" statement. E
