I didn't think scan to SMB was an OS specific feature, meaning that as long as the MAC OS is a version supported by the machine, then scan to SMB should work anyway, not requiring any firmware update. I could be wrong, though.

Mac OS hasn't supported true SMB since OS X 10.6 I think. They can be set up using FTP though.

There IS a workaround for scanning SMB on a Mac, but it's really convoluted... and gets into some support boundaries that most companies have.
