I have a KM C458 that actually ran out of cyan toner in the field. When I replaced the toner the cyan tried to refill but could not or said replenish cyan toner and the color slot that shows no toner in the unit.
I'm limited on substituting parts because I do not have a spare one at present. What I have done is added cyan manually with the service tool and the ATC level is about 5.5 now enough so it should work. I also pulled the developer to see if the brush looked depleted or enough gone to cause a problem, it does not visually. I pulled the sub hopper out and apart and checked the mylar that shows toner full in the sub hopper it was ok. Also cleaned the sensors that the mylar eventually activate when the sub hopper is full. I spun the sub hopper gears manually and everything is working fine also. Watched the gears spin that adds toner to the hopper with the top cover off and watched the toner spin fine also. I also pulled the piezoelectric sensor off the back to inspect for debris on the cyan developer and there is no debris. I swapped the contacts that read the toner with another one of the color units due to they are the same and the cyan is still not recognised.
Swapped drum units to eliminate any shorting but they are fine.
I'm trying to thumb drive the firmware but that has not started possibly due to there is still a real problem not firmware. So Im asking here what in the unit tells that the toner is new in the unit? It has to be the Controller board all these sensors attach to in the front of the machine but tell me if i,m wrong. If I order that board that is a cheap troubleshoot and maybe new Cyan Developer. Although with all the readings I get I don't think its the dev unit or dev?
Has anyone had this particular problem? We monitor the units but for some reason the toner running out was not visible by any report. Any help with the above is appreciated. I myself don't believe in something going in the field that a back up unit for parts is not kept in the shop, but we have a space problem. Im sure you get it. Any ideas and help is appreciated. Also did a reset of problem to unit through power and reset key held.
