The C500 is a machine made for producing big quantities; The C451 is made for office work and the likes.

The C500 is older; The C451 is more recent.

The C500 has to use a Fiery controller (make sure you get it with the machine, or else you'll only be able to copy); The C451 has an internal controler - although it can also use a Fiery if needed.

Although I don't know much about service costs, I'd wager the C500 is more expensive to maintain than the C451 - but it's to be expected, since it is supposed to print a much larger volume per month.

The C500, being an older machine, has long been replaced by the C6500 and C6501 - both much better machines than the C500; the C451 is the latest in line (if I'm not mistaken), and so you're still getting the latest from Konica Minolta in that range.

With all that, it's up to you to decide - although take what I say here with a grain of salt. Let other express their opinions and then use that to your best interest.

Cheers! :)

Buy a new kyocera taskalfa colour machine and you will be in heaven for reliability and cost. Trust me i have fixed every colour copier ever made!

xcopy, that's not really answering the poster's question.

I would always choose the C451 over the C500.

The C500 has the edge in theory, but in terms of real-world reliability...it's a nightmare.

Chose the C451, or stretch the budget (if at all possible?) and find a used C6500.

That would be the best bet, IMHO.

Wow, here's my opinion, the difference is that the C500 will produce photo quality copies and prints with the fiery, but the maintenance is a nightmare and a used machine is going to cost some big bucks to get working decent. It is designed for small print shops. You can take a 35mm photo and copy it on the same type of paper and not be able to tell the difference with the naked eye.

The C451 is an Office copier and the quality of copy and print when compared to a 35mm photo will be easily noticable. It is 2008 technology, but does not look like it will be continued in the future. The c550 family (c450,c550,c650) are the same machines at different speeds. The C550 and C650 have been replaced for 2009 with c552 and c652 models.

The cost should be a new c451 compared to a used c500, and I would still expect to pay more for the c500, unless it is currently capable of being just a big paper weight. A used c500 that is selling for the same price as a used c451 must need $10K in repairs.
