Hi,

Does anyone know is it possible to replace original System 20GB HDD in Canon IR series with bigger 40 or 60 GB.

Also still need system software for Canon IR 3300.

Thanks.

Regards.

You can use a bigger HDD,i think it will only "see" the size that it needs to operate.

You can use a larger drive but it has to be encoded for Canon, otherwise the system software won't load using the Service Support Tool.

Thanks copierguy,i forgot about that. The drives we use are Toshiba, they are the most likely to be good for Canon.

No, you have to use a HDD that's specifically encoded for Canon iR devices. You have to buy them from Canon, although I understand there are a few aftermarket companies that sell them. They don't always work so well, but for the most part, they will do the job. I beleive the HDD's are made by Toshiba, and now that I think about it, the specs (Size) have to be the same as the HDD you remove.

No it is not possible because of the systems software. It might allow you to use it but it will not use all the harddrives memory. The software has set partition in it.

You can use a Toshiba HDD not purchased from Canon. If you have the SST you can load the system software onto the blank HDD. This is what we do everytime we need to replace a HDD, it is by for more cost effective.

What Vendor do you get those HDDs from?

Most recently we purchased the hard drives from Computer Giants. We have used other vendors in the past but I don't have the info handy. If my memory serves me correctly I believe they were around $50 each.

Thanks Freedomtt. I'll check them out. That's a great price.

We also use the Hard drives from Computer Giants. Great $$$ savings. You can get the 20G or the 40G ( Needed for the iR2220 and iR3320 models) We Have also used them in the new 70 and 30 series. Memory Experts sells them too. Cheaper than Canon but more expensive than Computer Giants.

Just an fyi...If you go into the c:\ServTool folder, where all the service files are stored on your pc. Then find the model you are looking for, there should be a folder called HDFormat. In that folder there should be 1 file that should look something like iR2200-XXxx0007-HDFormat.ift (depending on the version). If you copy that file to your desktop and then change the "ift" at the end to "txt", you can see all the Hard Drives that will work with that particular model. I usually look on a website at Compuvest Corp. (http://www.compuvest.com) for the Drives. You can get new and refurbished, they have been pretty reliable. Just make sure that you look for the right drive, since the list does show more than just the regular 9.5mm laptop drives.

I have success for the following brands of HDD for the IR3300-3320i series.
Hitachi 80gb
western digital 80gb
Toshiba 80gb

I'm pretty sure most HDD regardless of brands are able to do the job just as long as the RPM speed onthe HDD is compatible.
I'm using a clone software system to get my disk configured.

And just a further note on .ift files...
Canon releases updated .ift files each time a new compatible HDD is found.
Make sure that you go to your regional Canon site and download the new .ift file and place them into your SST folder.
For MANY of the machines this .ift file can be modified although...I heard the latest gossip from Canon.inc the other day and they are going to begin encrypting ALL .ift files from now on.
They've already started with the new C7000 series....you CANNOT use a generic HDD in that machine.

Then wouldn't it be prudent to make a disk image the moment the machine arrives in an office and keep it on record somewhere in the even that the drive fails? At least this way all the special encryption that Canon puts in is restored without any problems.

I use acronis true image home to clone the HDD. One of the best and easiest software to use compared to a few that i have tried.

Guys, I have been trying for several months to find a solution, but could not do anything. I'm looking for HDD image (preferably generated by Acronis TrueImage), for my iR3300 (with network support). I would be very grateful, if you could put this image somewhere on any FTP server, or share it through the torrent system... Please... I really tried everything, but can't put the firmware on a new HDD.

Thanks!

Canon WM2-5216-000: Hitachi 20gig - HTS541020G9AT00 :D or this is the same drive - (13G1581) :)

Will work in the following Image Runners and maybe others - I haven't updated this in about a year

Canon WM2-5222-020: Hitachi 40gig - HDS728040PLAT20 :D or this is the same drive - (0A30209) :)

Will work in the following Color Image Runners and maybe others - I haven't updated this in about a year

ir60 85 105 550 600 5000 5020 6000 6020 7200 8500 irC3100 3200 3220 5800 6800

Sorry Hejsan, it is not possible, because, u must clone 1 to 1 this disks, otherwise, machine is not run...

when i take image from original disk , make a copy disk from this image, i'll see many more problem.

As a last resort you can try a similar HDD model to the one's listed in the HDFormat.ift file of the copier's firmware and use the instructions found in Copytechnet.com (http://www.copytechnet.com/forums/attachments/canon/520d1218187407-new-hard-disk-ir3300-sst_-_hdd_not_found.pdf)

I believe Oze a highly respected member of this forum uploaded the pdf instructions.

It's a bit hit and miss though with using a HDD not on the list. Some will work and others won't.

Yes you can.
First step you must format hdd with SST, if you can’t, try another first step: format hdd in windows in fat or fat32. After that it gone be possible.
I have already done that. It must be an ATA hdd.
Sorry my English. I’m to practice more! :(

I think the most important thing is that the HDD needs to be low level formatted first.

I doubt it. Why would you need more than 80gb anyway? If you need more and its networked, put a computer next to it and store documents on that.

I would think that if you needed 20G max, you could use a larger HDD and partition off 20G marking it primary/active and leave the extra space unallocated. Then load the system software onto the 20G partition. Never tried it though.

some clone tools makes partition copy. so the mbr will not copied. so you have to use sectorwise copying tool.that means disk to disk clone mode tool.

if you want to format using sst. just send me the hd format file to me. i edit it and send you. it must work
