View Full Version : Error Code Richo Aficio 1515 drum counter reset

I've got a Richo Aficio 1515f that's making perfectly good copies but the "replace drum " is in the display. I downloaded the service manual but can't seem to locate which SP number resets the drum count. I'm not sure if you replace the drum unit it resets the counter at that point or if there's way to do it in the SP mode which would be a great option. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!

It's only a replace photoconductor message. The unit will continue to run until the PCU no longer produces an acceptable copy or outright fails. AFAIK there is no SP to reset this. The switch mechanism on the PCU can be reset to trick the machine into thinking the PCU is new but then it will attempt to initialize the already well used (at least 45k) PCU which is not ideal.
The PCU was designed to do 45k. I have seen examples reach 70k but failures like broken gears and leaking developer all over are a PITA, not to mention that quality will start a gradual slide downhill from this point forward. The best thing to do, no BS, is to replace it at the recommended interval.

You can change, or disable, the change PCU prompt. I don't know the exact SP, but it's in the 7's. I used to always set the 1515 for a change prompt at 60k, or just disable it (a binary value).

See if this helps
There is no reset, check the contacts on the bottom. Than the reset comes automaticly.

PCU Counter is not automatically reset in this unit. To reset it you reset the dev counter..I think its the same SP mode as the MP161...SP7 992-004 (if not then it's somewhere around there)

PCU Counter is not automatically reset in this unit.
Oh, yes it is. Make sure with a new PCU that you turn the machine on with the doors open and new PCU installed. When the machine is indicating that a door is open you close it up and it will initialize the new PCU.

Hmm, interesting. I just looked in my manual (I only have the MP161 service manual), and although it's not really clear on the procedure, it does suggest that it will calibrate when the machine is powered on. (I usually don't turn them off for a PCU). It's not very specific about resetting the counter, etc (go figure...a poorly written Ricoh service manual !;););)).
Thanks for pointing that out though. Interestingly, I've replaced tons of these, never calibrated a single one, and never had a problem. I guess that's why I assumed it was just reset the dev counter and go.

Hi Kevin, I very recently had the same problem with a GESTETNER DSm415PF, which I think falls within the same category with the AFICIO 1515, because I used the same drum & blade in it. To reset the PCU message: RESET the DV counter in service mode 7-992-004. It will clear the pcu message instantly.

We send out the type 1515 PCU direct to the customer, it resets the message automatically when the unit is replaced.
It's not quite as straightforward explaining it to the end user as say the 1027 is, you need to take the complete toner hopper out of the machine and then there's a small lead at the front with a blue connector that needs disconnecting but is quite doable for most customers who aren't complete technophobes.
Like the 1027, the alarm is set to appear at 45k, the copy quality may be perfectly acceptable but this is the expected life that Ricoh place on the unit. It's up to you or your bosses to decide whether you are fitting it at the alarm or simply fitting it on failure. I've got a fair amount of these boxes on my patch and I do carry a spare PCU in the car, purely because some customers will not place a call for poor copy quality and/or "Replace PCU" alarm and will only call when the machine is finally down (usually SC500 main motor lock if the dev unit has seized or "won't add toner" when the dev auger gears are mashed).

I tried a few of the things suggested, but found that the service mode only allowed me options from 1 to 4. So I tried checking the clip on the rear of the drum unit. My situation was I installed a new drum but must have not followed the correct procedure as once I installed the new OEM unit I still had the "replace photoconductor message". What fixed it for me was to reinstall the metal tab on the bottom rear of the PR module behind the white gear which is only seen from beneath the module and it is at the very rear. You can rotate the drum coupler until the slot is visible in the gear then hold the metal tab, gently, in the slot as you rotate the drum coupler slightly until the metal tab is now behind the gear. This holds the metal tab contacts in place so as to create contact briefly at power up until the drum rotates. Now that your tab is in place, reinstall the PR module with the covers open and power up the machine. Once it tells you to close the covers go ahead and do so. It took a minute or two before the message went away, but it cleared once I performed this method. I believe my original error was to install the unit and closed the covers before powering on which allowed the drum to rotate before the counter had been cleared by the tab/contact precedure. I cannot promise you anything but this procedure worked for me. I do NOT reccomend this procedure as a method to extend the use of the drum module past it's life cycle as I have heard of bad consequences such as broken gears due to things binding up from over use.
