Ricoh 5510 fax

A customer called me and said that he couldn't send a fax in the auto or scan mode. He has to press "on hook dial" then dial the number. If he tries the auto mode, it just errors out.
Somehow this rings a bell but I cant recall what the problem is. Sound familiar?

The last time that happened to me the customer had changed their phone service and did not have to dial a "9" for an outside line anymore. The numbers in the address book had to be updated and I to slow down their initial TX and RX speed to 14.4 and turn off ECM.

Thanks for the reply but to be sure I'm being understood, it is not the speed dials that are a problem it that dialing must be manual not automatic. or it errors out,

Ooop, sorry. I get it now. One thing about it, when you post a problem on this site, it's usually a good one. I wish I had a solution for you on this one.

Sounds like he is filling the memory with too much information.
Can he send just 1 page to you on auto?

good question. He is a mortgage broker so probably lots of 14" paper. I'll ask him.

The 5510 was always pretty good with memory though, if my memory serves, there was a 40 MB expansion card available, though that may just be for the LF515e version. Any chance you could talk him into picking up one of those?

I don't know, he's had this machine for a very long time. With the state of his industry, it is doubtful.

I vote for the memory issue as well.

If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't have to be completely full, but rather at a certain percentage.

If the memory is at that point (or higher) the machine "thinks" that it wouldn't have enough room to store the new transmission, so memory transmission will fail, and direct will work.

BTW... While 14" paper certainly may contain more data than letter size, much more space will be eaten up by pictures, shading, graphs, high resolution, etc...
