Old PC games that still work

This is probably stupid, but I recently had a chance to see which games I had back in the XP days still work on Windows 8.1. Only two so far - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and Myst III Exile.
Anyone had any luck with anything else?

Most should work running in 32 bit from the desktop. You might have to use the compatibility settings.

And there in lies the rub - I tried compatibility settings for my other favorite games from back in those days - Descent 2, Command an Conquer and Starcraft (to a lesser extent also Destruction Derby and Sim3000), and it didn't work.

I don't have 8.1 but I do have windows 7 64bit and sim city 3000 opens, but doesn't run very smooth. Sims 1 tries to open but never makes it to the menu. Oldest game I have that runs on 7 64 bit without changing any compatibility settings is Quake 2. Quake 1 will work but only with a modified executable. Oldest game I have that can be ran with using a virtual machine is commander keen.

I haven't dug out my WH40K Dark Crusade game since I got my win 8 machine....I'd be upset if it doesn't work....

Re: Old PC games that still work

I had a few of old games, not even sure if I have the disks for them anymore: Starcraft, MOHAA, Q3, Q2, C&C:RA2, SimTower, CloseCombat 2, Cod1&2..

I know most haven't worked since XP, even with compatibility mode. I got cod1 and 2 to work on Win 7, but they're newer than the others.

And I really wanted to play SimTower and CloseCombat 2 again.. Guess I need to find an old Win95 machine..

You can try using XP Mode and see if you can get more games to run. Note this only installs on Windows 7.

Oh yeah was good times. Was also the same time I got my first cable internet connection, a whopping 256kbps i think.

I was one of those that loved the bazooka, until it got nerfed, because it was considered the "noob toob". I got better, I was ok at it, I even joined a clan on GameSpy breifly..

I tried it I have Win7 pro.. But no dice. Either it would start and not work or not work at all. So I gave up. I use Steam now generally for all my games now.

I had trouble with some older games on XP mode in Windows 7. However, installing XP via VirtualBox seems to work properly even will full screen games.

I'll try that out and see if I can get it to work on Win8 (the website says it should). Thanks!
