    MFC-L5900 CQ

When you scan or copy the image is light(not when printing or printing internal report). The machine is 2 years old with about 60k on it. It has gradually got like this, even with it on the darkest setting it is lighter than it should be. They also have 2 MFC-L5700's that were bought at the same time and one of them is doing the same thing.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I know it's stating the obvious but cleaning the optics would be a good place to start.
Not au fait with american model numbers but if it does not have optics recalibrate the scanner.
This is normally done by putting plain white paper on scan head and running maintenance mode 02 followed by 55 then 99 to exit

    Hope this helps

Turn off toner save mode under Ecology. Also at 60k drum unit should be changed, they can only reset drum counter without changing parts.
Agree optics would be always to consider especially if they smoke alot around machine or in dusty environment.

Sorry TSB it cannot be either of those as Scans are weak as well.

Can only be optics or CCD logically

Dickie, I like and truly appreciate your inputs. I admit we know theory and you're right on the money here. Still in my practice I never opened scanner of 6900 for cleaning and I have tons of them in the field.
But, if Brother messed 5900 model scanner sealing...that would be another story.

OP make 2 to 2 sided copy/scan from ADF, if 1 side output is bad and 2 good do what Dickie suggested.

There are no optics to clean other than the scanner, it is clean. I tried the code 55 in maintenance mode with no change. When you do 2-2 thru ADF both sides are light. These machines are in a lawyers office which is clean and smoke free. Toner save mode is off.
Is the CCD the only left that would be the culprit ? Is it cost effective to replace ?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Do factory reset.

Do it first from user menu:

Yes reset is done via service mode
91 is a reset without changing any user saved information
01 Is a full reset but you will lose all customer set information so it would be a good idea to print out all available reports and settings before you do this. Then re print them afterwards and compare for any changes to reset parameters

    Good luck
