Send it Back??? Or pray for the best?

Hello there fellow techs. We have come across a couple instances lately where we unbox new machines (Ricoh MP 3555's specifically), and they have developer spilled all over the back/ inside of machine (boards/ clutches/ etc.), and on bottom of box/ pallet/ plastic. We have been hesitant to turn them on, or even do anything with them except take pictures and report to trucking company (fedex one time, and Brown the other). Even though the boxes aren't damaged, WE know that the copier has been layed down or fell on it's back.

So, the question is, would you guys send them back for a new one?

    OR,

Vacuum/ blow it out/ replenish developer, and pray that nothing will happen when installed at final location?

We personally just don't want to take the chance, so we've had the machines replaced and sent the "bad ones" back. Is this going overboard? It's mostly "Peace of mind" for us.

I would send it back for all the reasons you state plus so Ricoh corrects the issue. Same thing happened on Sharps last year. Enough headache with returns and they starting installing caps on the dev units.

You would think that with developer preloaded in these B/W machines, they would have a plug in there (color boxes have those pull strips usually which work pretty well). The foam seal that mates with the toner hopper just isn't enough to prevent spillage. It would only take a matter of seconds to remove it upon setup, and the same is true to put one in on the production line.

Good to know you would do the same. Thanks.

I'd definitely send it back. Even if you vacuum out the spilled developer, there's no telling if you got ALL of it, and if any of it found its way across a live circuit board, you'd be chasing electrical "rabbits" down rabbit holes for months.

...we have enough to do as it is, without making more work for ourselves!! ... Can I get an Amen?
