    Off Lease Machines

Welp, the supply shortage has hit the used copier market. I ordered some machines today and it was slim pickings. I picked up the phone and called my rep and he's said it's as bad as he's ever seen it and expects it to get worse. Has no idea when things will get better.

I was able to order a couple of 4002i's but no color. The only color was super high meters.

Evidently, the off lease market is booming right now. Because of the new machine shortage?? My supplier is very low compared to usual. Not good!

A lot of this is above my paygrade but here's what my sales rep told me and he works for the biggest lease return company in the country.

He said companies are opting to keep to their machines and aren't turning them back in.

... the copier industry mirrors the auto industry in many ways. Quality used cars are in very short supply and sell for premium prices. The same for copiers.

... if a dealer or OEM has a quality used copier coming off lease and exercises their first right of refusal, few copiers go back to the leasing company for disposal which are in turn purchased by equipment resellers. Those copiers that do go back may have high meter reads, are service dogs or have had quality parts inside swapped out for lesser quality parts by the service provider.

... for a long time COVID forced buyers to react as their revenues were in free fall due to lock downs. These buyers either bought used machines or A4 machines to reduce their operating costs. This sucked up much of what was available.

Most used A4 copiers were designed to have maximum life of well under 300k. They do not have much value as their consumables or parts are often expensive or labor intensive to replace.

As apps on new copiers to reach Cloud platforms become more important and new operating systems are introduced discontinued copiers will satisfy a smaller audience.

For current customer who decide to keep their current copiers past lease expiry, I always write a new service contracts that excludes electronics and fusers. All repairs on such are invoiced for time & materials.

Depending on the original terms of the lease, either extending the lease period or exercising buyout options.
