Tried an exact same working hard drive from exactly the same machine, still getting a E602-4000 error, any ideas very much appreciated

Format the HDD then re-install system software. If not successful, replace the HDD. Could try main con clear first(run systems diagnostics first..main con, dcon,ROM check)

Reformatted a new hard drive, E602 error is now clear, machine is loading software and now displaying a new error code E000246-0002

When you swapped the boards around, did you move the counter PCB's? All those small boards need to stay with the original machines. That is why you now have an E246 code.
